'It's About Individuals, Working Together' by Scott Tips
CategoriesYou know Margaret Mead's saying, "Never believe that a few caring people can't change the world. For indeed, that's all who ever have." But what you may not realize is how very true that has been in the health-freedom movement. A few people, working together, have made the difference between less and more freedom for us all.
Consider our NHF president, Maureen Kennedy Salaman, who for more than a quarter of a century has been devoting her life to the cause of health freedom. Whether it has been tracking down Congressman Claude Pepper and booking a seat next to him on his airplane trip home so that she could successfully convince him not to pursue anti-health freedom legislation that would have given the U.S. Post Office complete censorship powers over everything, including dietary supplements, sent through the mails or, more recently, giving countless hours of her time and many thousands of her dollars to make sure that the National Health Federation keeps its doors open and stays active, she has been there and truly made a difference.
Consider, too, Dr. Rodrigo Rodriquez, another NHF Board member, who at a very critical time contributed his advice, staff, and thousands of dollars to ensure that Health Freedom News stayed in print and went out to our NHF members. He did not have to do that when he had so many other concerns and expenses in his life at the time.
And, of course, we at the NHF by no means have the monopoly on dedicated individuals making a difference. In Europe, the Alliance for Natural Health's Robert Verkerk and David Hinde have worked ceaselessly and at great personal sacrifice to their home lives and personal finances in their effort to defeat the draconian Food Supplements Directive of the European Union that will remove from health-food store shelves throughout Europe many thousands of the basic dietary supplements that we in the United States and Canada take for granted now. Their costly lawsuit, to which the NHF has contributed financially, has a very real chance of succeeding.
Other tireless and dedicated health-freedom fighters, Suzan Walter, the head of the American Holistic Health Association, and Sepp Hasslberger of La Leva, also deserve mention for making a difference as well. Along with the NHF, they have both worked without letup to get critical information out to the public about the Codex Alimentarius process and its relentless global drive to strangle the free sale and consumption of dietary supplements. They will both be attending the next Codex Alimentarius meeting in Bonn, Germany this Fall; and Sepp Hasslberger, who is an NHF member and on the NHF Advisory Board, will be one of the NHF delegates at that meeting.
But, of course, there are countless other heroes, who must remain unmentioned here or else this entire issue of Health Freedom News would be devoted only to my editorial. Just remember that it has been the NHF's own staff and individual members who have, together, made the difference time after time. Whether it has been the NHF staff working long, hard hours or the elderly retiree sending us the last three dollars from her social-security check or the countless thousands of members and friends of members who deluged Congress in 1994 with an avalanche of mail calling for the passage of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), the freedoms that we enjoy now have been preserved by all of you working together.
Now, after a decade of relative health freedom in the United States, and to such an extent that we have become the mecca for those who cannot obtain health products in other countries, we are under the shadow of pending legislation and regulations that would greatly restrict our rights to consume the healthy foods and supplements that we want and that we have the moral right to consume. Read Lee Bechtel and Paul Anthony Taylor's articles in this issue and you will get an idea of just how serious the situation is.
More than ever, and in this critical election year, we all must write our legislators and let each and every one of them know that we will not accept any restrictions upon our health freedoms and that if they vote for legislation that in any way limits or restricts those freedoms protected by DSHEA, then we will vote against them in this election.Write them now. And in a week write them again. Then, telephone them to make sure they got your message. Be persistent! Your persistent, vocal presence will let them know we are watching and that we won't forget how they have acted. Together, we can make the difference.
