No Term Limits for the U.S. President?
CategoriesI just got word of proposed legislation to repeal the 22nd Amendment. The 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution limits US presidents to two terms. I doubt (and hope) that it doesn't get very far, but it is a sign of the times: Many unprecedented things have already been accomplished recently, so it is worth keeping track of. At best, debate about it could expand into much-needed dialogue about the state of democracy. At worst, it could sit undebated and out of sight until conditions are ripe for a permanent presidency, and then suddenly be pushed through (like the first Patriot Act was, with most senators and reps not even reading it).
It is significant that this bill to repeal the US presidential term limit was proposed on February 17, 2005, and was referred to the House Subcommittee on the Constitution April 4, 2005. So it has been around four months and I hadn't heard anything about it until today, from an obscure listserv. One more example of significant developments that often don't show up on the radar in a timely way...
