Subject: article - Hormone Hysteria? / new book recommendation for womenHas anyone read through the complete article in the October 2003 issue of Scientific American? Hormone Hysteria? Hormone replacement therapy may not be so bad By Dennis Watkins
[also available online at http://www.sciam.com/print_version.cfm?articleID=000C63B6-2F80-1F62-905980A84189EEDF ].
This article states in numerous ways the the recently surfaced evidence regarding dangers of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), and then in the ending paragraph (3 brief sentences), gives very weak rationale that "several researchers" believe more testing is needed to validate new methods of HRT, and that HRT "deserves careful consideration". Considering the strong title of the article, any solid material to support its contention is seriously lacking.
There is a new book (A Maverick of Medicine Speaks to Women), that's been released this year by a highly experienced and internationally respected gynecologist, which covers the deplorable state of affairs in regards to health care for women, and offers many suggestions on alternative options. Authored by Dr. Duane Townsend, he states in the introduction to his book, "I don't mind being called controversial. You might say I've earned the right."
Townsend was instrumental in the discovery of the dangers associated with DES (diethyl-stilbestrol), the drug given to pregnant women in the 50's and 60's that causes defects in the reproductive organs of both female and male offspring. In 1998 Townsend also invented the roller-ball endometrial ablation procedure, to assist women that experience abnormal bleeding. It is a safe technique that rolls a very small electrically-charged ball over the uterine lining, which destroys the lining and reduces excessive amounts of bleeding. This technique can save many women from a hysterectomy procedure. The technique has been further improved by the advent of cryoablation, which uses intense cold instead of the charged ball. In regards to this procedure, Townsend says in his book, "Every woman should know that it offers an excellent alternative to hysterectomy. Unfortunately, too many don't." He has traveled world-wide to help train doctors in the use of these new techniques.
Another chapter is titled "HMOs and the Pharmaceutical Empire: Health-Care Heresy". Other sections of the book offer meaningful alternatives to pharmaceutical HRT and numerous other health-related issues, and he includes many examples from his long years of medical practice. What is most gratifying though, is to experience the respect and sensitivity with which he speaks about women and their particular challenges.

I do not derive any financial benefit from telling about this book. It is a worthwhile, wide-ranging book that offers many options and could give hope to numerous women, that improvement in their situations is a reachable goal. Townsend stresses that we all need to demand more from our physicians, and that includes telling them about the proven options to current conventional medical care.
Best wishes,
Char
