What is MoveOn all about?
MoveOn is working to bring ordinary people back into politics. With a system that today revolves around big money and big media, most citizens are left out. When it becomes clear that our "representatives" don't represent the public, the foundations of democracy are in peril. MoveOn is a catalyst for a new kind of grassroots involvement, supporting busy but concerned citizens in finding their political voice. Our international network of more than 2,000,000 online activists is one of the most effective and responsive outlets for democratic participation available today.Al Gore is running political ads again including a full page one in the New York Times. But the former vice-president isn't announcing another run at the White House. Instead, he is lending his name and voice to a relatively new political organization called MoveOn.org. In just a few short years, it has gone from a fledgling Internet site to a major player in US politics.
As of last June, MoveOn.org had raised more than 6 million dollars for its choice of Democratic candidates. Since then, grassroots donations have continued to pour in and now billionaire philanthropist George Soros is throwing his financial clout behind the group, which could boost its war chest by millions more.
One of the people behind MoveOn.org is Eli Pariser. He's the twenty-two year old director of international campaigns, and he joined us from New York.
Soft Money
Well, its not surprising many of the critics of MoveOn.org are Republicans. And their chief complaint is that the organization is a soft money slush fund. To tell us more about soft money and how it's used, we were joined by Larry Noble. He's the executive director of the Centre for Responsible Politics. He was in Washington DC.
