Dispelling the Night-Time Frequent Urination

"Physicians frequently ask the question about a man's night-time frequency of urination when evaluating his prostate problems. This question seems to imply that the frequency of urination is the result of his prostate being enlarged, and perhaps many physicians believe this is the reason. However, the two are not connect because elderly women who have no prostate can also have the need to go to the bathroom several times during the night. An enlarged prostate can prevent complete emptying of the bladder and increase the frequency of urination, but this is not the major reason for frequent night-time urination.

Fluids tend to accumulate in the legs of both men and women as we get older. This is water in the tissue and is exacerbated by the high-sodium, low-potassium in our modern diet. It can become an obvious symptom of someone with congestive heart disease. Gravity tends to keep the fluid in the lower extremities during the day. While we sleep in the horizontal position the fluids are not held down by gravity and are taken out of the tissue to be dumped in the bladder. This action continues during the night and a person with obvious signs of swelling in the feet or ankles will find the swelling greatly reduced by morning.

The best way to reduce the retention of fluids is to balance the sodium-potassium in the body. This will also reduce the blood pressure and help prevent congestive heart disease. We can still not return to our youthful state, and some fluid retention during the day with frequent urination during the night is inevitable.

Most doctors a oblivious about this as they are so plugged into drugs that anything else just seems to escape them - sad.

The above is form a must read larger and excellent resource on the prostate at

Here is a commentary on the recent (Jan, 25th, 2011) Public Participation Meeting (PPM) on Fluoride in the City of London, Ontario. The meeting started with a strong pro fluoride stance form the City engineer. His lack of knowledge on chemistry of the toxic wastes used to fluoridate water could embarrass even a high school student never mind his own profession. He blatantly violated his "duty to public welfare" as... [read more]

My father is 89 years and
in assisted living - He is bothered by being up 5 to 7 times a night to urinate - He does not have the probem during the day - in fact, can go for several hours without having to urinate. He is on several medications - including disepam, aricept for dementia, cumadin for his blood - what could be the possible causes for this frequent nighttime urination? He is exhausted then during the day - Please help if you can. Thank you, debi gorga deborahgorga@yahoo.com
