Vitamin B3 and Arthritis

Another use for vitamin B3 to make the pharmas go around the bend... See also my earlier posts on arthritis as follows:

Boron and arthritis

How to Cheaply Obtain & Use Boron for Arthritis

The world was still deep in the Great Depression when William Kaufman, MD, PhD had already begun treating osteoarthritis with two to four grams of niacinamide daily. Now, over 60 years later, his pioneering work in orthomolecular medicine is receiving the recognition it so well deserves.

In a 1978 radio interview with Carlton Fredericks, Dr Kaufman told of how "I had one patient who was so severely arthritic that I could not bend his elbows enough to measure his blood pressure. He was one of my first patients. I gave him niacinamide for a week in divided doses, and then he could bend his arm. I took him off it and gave him a look-alike medicine
(placebo). In a week he was back where he was before: his joints were stiff again.

"I arrived at my (megavitamin B-3 dosage) schedule by actually seeing the response of patients with varying degrees of arthritis. One cannot give a single large dose and get any really favorable results in arthritis... It is necessary to divide the doses so that the blood levels of niacinamide would be fairly uniform throughout the waking day."

Kaufman's findings were both plain and elegant. The greater the stiffness, the more frequent the doses. Severely crippled arthritic patients needed up to a total of 4,000 mg/day. Divided into 10 doses per day, in one to three months, patients could now get out of their chair, or bed. "If continued, they would be able comb their hair and be able to walk upstairs, so they
would no longer be prisoners of the house. By the end of about three years treatment, they would be fully ambulatory, and this was even in the older age groups."

It certainly does seem to work well. The main supplement I recommend for arthritis is Enzymatic Therapy Doctor's Choice for Joint Health and it contains 330mg per dose (take up to three times per day), but Murray, who formulated the supplement, says in Encyclopedia for Nutrional Healing that the desired range is 900-4000mg per day for this and other disorders, like diabetes (and cites Kaufman's research). The Joint Health also contains other nutrients which greatly increase the effect, though, and it has never failed to work in my experience.

Here is a commentary on the recent (Jan, 25th, 2011) Public Participation Meeting (PPM) on Fluoride in the City of London, Ontario. His lack of knowledge on chemistry of the toxic wastes used to fluoridate water could embarrass even a high school student never mind his own profession. He blatantly violated his "duty to public welfare" as... [read more]

I have just been diagnosed with the beginnings of arthritis...still young enough to enjoy life and I find I cannot walk without experiencing severe pain or swelling in the bones of my feet and must use a crutch now. I live in Los Angeles. Can anyone tell me where to get hold of BORON here and how many mg. of Vitamin B3 is needed daily. I am in the beginning stage of this difficulty.. Some days I walk around limping without this crutch that I use...but soon there is swelling and it tires me greatly. Please suggest what you can.

i have had severe arthritis since i delivered my twins 10 years ago.now i am 45 and i have learnt to keep joint pain at bay by simply doing a few breathing exercises called pranayama.i got tired of being dependent on glucosamine and other aurvedic supplements. i love the freedom of having the cure inbuilt in my breathing system now.please learn kapalbhatti and anulom vilom pranayama from a good teacher. it keeps us in a positive inner state too.good luck..

I have had back surgery 2 years ago and now the vertebrae above and below are greatly affected and make it near impossible to move around some days. I am 68 yrs. old and take many vitamins and supplements. Can you help?
