Ester-C®, Ascorbic Acid, Mineral Ascorbates and Ascorbyl Palmitate
CategoriesWhy people would pay a higher price for so called Ester-C® when calcium ascorbate powder does the same thing at a much cheaper prince is truly laughable.
They pay because, like so many things, they are deliberately hoodwinked with the marketing patent bull and associated self serving sales pitches. These pitches are endemic in nearly all commercial enterprises, particularly in health related products in particular the generally toxic drugs and, as in this case to much lesser degree, also some generality safe nutrient products like vitamin C. In this case it gives health products a bad name which unfortunately reinforces the main stream propaganda by the main stream quacks...
Most clinical efficacy data of Vitamin C, is based on Drs. Klenner, Linus Pauling, Cathcart's etc, work that simply use plan old Sodium Ascorbate - most other forms are marketing ploys with possibly some rare exceptions.

-------------------------------------------------Ester-C® capsules each contain a paltry 100 milligrams of bioflavonoids along with 600 milligrams of calcium ascorbate and there is no mention on the label of the so called metabolites dehydroascorbic acid (oxidized ascorbic acid), calcium threonate, and trace levels of xylonate and lyxonate.
The real test of Ester-C® would have been be to compare it to calcium ascorbate and not ascorbic acid. Vitamin C occurs in fruit and vegetables as mineral ascorbates - not as ascorbic acid.
The only true ester of vitamin C is the fat soluble ascorbyl palmitate. To term mineral ascorbates as esters of vitamin C is incorrect.

This is also another interesting excerpt from Vit C link Mary sent:
I said in an earlier post that I thought Ester-C was a fat soluable vitamin C but person who describes herself as the 'mad nutritionist' said not (sorry I can't remember your first name and she may even be in another group), so here is reason for this confusion. Evidentally Ester-C is not fat soluable but is freq confused with Vit C ester which 'is':
............... Ascorbate and vitamin C metabolites: One such supplement (Ester-C®) contains mainly calcium ascorbate, but also contains small amounts of the vitamin C metabolites dehydroascorbate (oxidized ascorbic acid), calcium threonate, and trace levels of xylonate and lyxonate. Although the metabolites are supposed to increase the bioavailability of vitamin C, the only published study in humans found no difference between Ester-C® and commercially available ascorbic acid tablets with respect to the absorption and urinary excretion of vitamin C (40). Ester-C® should not be confused with ascorbyl palmitate, which is also marketed as "vitamin C ester" (see below).
Ascorbyl palmitate: Ascorbyl palmitate is actually a vitamin C ester (vitamin C that has been esterified to a fatty acid). In this case, vitamin C is esterified to the saturated fatty acid, palmitic acid, resulting in a fat-soluble form of vitamin C. Ascorbyl palmitate has been added to a number of skin creams due to interest in its antioxidant properties as well as the important role of vitamin C in collagen synthesis (41). Although ascorbyl palmitate is also available as an oral supplement, it is likely that most of it is hydrolyzed (broken apart) to ascorbic acid and palmitic acid in the digestive tract before it is absorbed (42). Ascorbyl palmitate is also marketed as, "vitamin C ester," which should not be confused with Ester-C® (see above).
Here is Mary's link to article on Vitamin C. It is very good reference on Vit C:
