More Health Canada Shenanigans To Squelch Competition
Categories"OK, Let me get this straight. It is acceptable to put Lindane which is a highly toxic insecticide on your child's skin but it is not acceptable to put lemon-based citronella on that same skin.Is this a joke?

No joke - this is to curb competition, typical for this agency, even if it means to foist on us dangerous chemicals from their cronies. Of course the smaller companies cave in - as they don't have the funding recourses. For an welcome exception see:
HEALTH CANADA - ELEMENTS OF COERCION DEALT CRUSHING BLOW
It is these shenanigans that prevent the use of safe cost effective alternatives. Another example is the use of Acetic acid (vinegar) instead of harmful pesticides. Health Canada regulations will not allow one to advertise acetic acid as a pesticide for your lawn or garden no matter how effective it might be. One has to go through a whole slew of expensive regulatory 'rig ma roll' before it could be accepted as such. Meanwhile they are quite content letting a whole slew of known toxic chemicals go scot free:
..."More than half of all recent registrations are temporary. Worse, they're frequently renewed; some have been extended five times."... For more see:
These temporary registrations are issued without any testing at all! But for acetic acid they will demand full registration.

September 17, 2004 - Re-evaluation of Citronella Oil and Related Active Compounds for Use as Personal Insect Repellents
In June 1990 (A90-01, Re-evaluation of Personal Insect Repellents), it was announced that personal insect repellent active ingredients, including citronella oil and related compounds, were subject to re-evaluation under authority of Section 19 of the Pest Control Products (PCP) Regulations.
Based on the available information, the PMRA was unable to conclude that the human health risks from the use of personal insect repellent products containing citronella oil and related compounds, applied directly to the skin, continues to be acceptable. As a result, the PMRA is proposing that the registrations for personal insect repellent products containing citronella oil and related active compounds applied directly to the skin be phased out unless registrants commit to provide further data that would address the deficiencies identified in this document.
This Proposed Acceptability for Continuing Registration (PACR) document provides a summary of the data reviewed and the rationale for the proposed regulatory decision for citronella oil and related substances. The PMRA will accept written comments on this proposal up to 60 days from the date of publication of this document. Please forward all comments to the Publications Coordinator at the address below.

Chemical companies are seeking, in the U.S., non-regulated status for genetically engineered grass. Approval of this, in my opinion, will ensure regular blanket-spraying of lawns with RoundUp (glyphosate), a chemical whose goal is to kill all plant life it comes in contact with. Farmers use it between crops to kill off all other plant growth on their fields. You may have heard of RoundUp Ready (Genetically engineered) soybeans and the... [read more]
