Five-year GM ban on way for Switzerland
Categories
Here is an example of a real democratic decision. Switzerland is the only country that I know off where major decisions are put on ballets and the politicians can only be elected for one term.
Should love to hear from Swiss readers to elaborate on the above!

Five-year GM ban on way for Switzerland
29.11.05
ZURICH - Switzerland has voted in favour of a five-year ban on the use of genetically modified plants and animals in farming, putting in place some of the toughest measures in Europe.
The move will force the Government to impose a blanket ban on the cultivation of so-called GM crops and the import of animals whose genes have been modified in the laboratory.
The moratorium does not apply to research into GM nor does it stop the import of GM food, but its supporters say the victory is a clear signal that the Swiss want GM-free produce.

Very interesting they are human after all... should have known. But at least they have referendums on such things! Not that I agree with mob rule!

You are quite right Chris. Many years ago some Swiss with a conscience initiated a referendum in the hope of stopping sales of Swiss armaments to foreign buyers. The armament industry reminded voters with big posters that banning arms sales would result in thousands of lost jobs. The Swiss voted to keep the trade going.
Referendums launched to stop the torture of lab animals by the pharma industry were also defeated.
Recently I received a letter "To All Citizens of Switzerland and Liechtenstein" from the local Swiss Embassy. It contained "advice" about the coming bird flu. Apparently Switzerland is stockpiling Tamiflu for its citizens but the embassy regretfully informed me it was unable to help Swiss citizens abroad to procure this medicine.
I wrote back to say that I intend to keep my Tamiflu-free lifestyle and that I consider the Swiss government gullible to the point of stupidity or corrupt to the point of criminality to stockpile this useless and dangerous drug, which will only benefit its shareholders - and especially its major shareholder, GWB's buddy Donald Rumsfield.
I would also like to point out that misguided (some would say treacherous)Swiss politicians managed to hardsell UN membership to the Swiss who by a very slim majority decided to join the UN. These very same politicians then gave support to the UN's blockade of Iraq, an action which resulted in Switzerland's loss of its long-cherished neutrality, not to speak of the deaths of over half a million Iraqi children due to lack of food and medical supplies, in gross violation of the UN's own convention on human and children's rights. By their fruits shall you know them...
As a Swiss citizen I feel somewhat like an American friend of mine who told me: "I love my country, but I hate my government."
