Stop Congress From Making DHEA Illegal:

Categories

Ask your Senators and Representative to oppose S. 1137 and any companion House legislation!

January 2, 2006

Dear Friend,

On May 26, Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA) introduced a bill that could cut off your access to DHEA, a vital dietary supplement that provides important health benefits to seniors and those with chronic conditions.

Your immediate help is needed to keep this safe and effective dietary supplement legal and accessible.

Why Should We Oppose This Bill?

This legislation, S. 1137, would classify DHEA as an anabolic steroid, adding it to the list of controlled substances and removing it from the market. Similar legislation is expected soon in the House of Representatives.

DHEA is not an anabolic steroid. It is a naturally occurring hormone that has a wide range of benefits, including maintaining muscle strength and strong bones, boosting immunity, and improving mood and sleep patterns. Further studies suggest that DHEA may be helpful for such conditions as obesity, cancer and Alzheimer's disease. DHEA dietary supplements, which have been on the market for over 20 years, are derived from a plant in the wild yam family.

This legislation is aimed at preventing abuse of steroids by athletes. However, DHEA, unlike androstenedione and other hormone precursors closer to testosterone, does not have a marked effect in building muscle or enhancing performance. Researchers at Harvard University conducted surveys of weightlifters and other athletes and found that DHEA is rarely if ever used by athletes for performance enhancement.

How You Can Help

We need your help to keep DHEA legal. Go to the Save Our Supplements website here. Just put your ZIP code into the ZIP box in the top left corner and click “Go” to send a free e-mail letting your Senators and Representative know that you oppose any legislation that would make DHEA illegal.

Congress should not restrict access to a dietary supplement that has given health to millions of Americans. Take action now!

10/25/07 I need to mention that my experience with DHEA has made me believe that it is some kind of consciousness modulator.I want to mention that 7-Keto DHEA maybe better at treating the negative symptoms of mental illness or schizophrenia. I only take 50mg of DHEA once a week, this seems to be enough to improve my symptoms.I think medication levels should be changed or varied to compliment the improvement in preception and consciousness from DHEA. It may also take 24 to 48 hours to have for an improvement in the overall state of mind in schizophrenia.DHEA is not a supplement that acts on the symptoms of loose associations, ideas of inference ,and paranoia immediate fashion like a perscription psychaitric medication. It affects the mental threshold at which a person with schizophrenia has negative symptoms.

I decided to write back, because I have a clearer understanding about how DHEA might work to improve the symptoms of mental illness. I only take DHEA when I have a stressor that causes mild background symptoms of schizophrenia. This stressor could be caffeine or some daily life event. I find 7 keto DHEA more effective than DHEA. The DHEA seems to act like an allergy medication, once it is taken during a stressful event the brain builds up tolerance to that specfic stressor. Research studies in hospitals maybe inconclusive because of the lack of varied diet or normal stressors from daily living. This maybe why DHEA becomes ineffective when tested on patients in a hospital setting. I think that DHEA can help the brains neurotransmitters adjust to stressful events. Taking DHEA for stress is a little like being treated for an allergy. It should be noted, that I have recently started aerobic exercise at the YMCA and this has been helpful.
