Pharma Masquerading as Health Freedom Groups

"Did you know that many activist/health/environmental/industry associations and groups, in whole or part, are funded by corporations with vested interests as this is the most effective and the best public relations tactic money can buy?"

The above is extracted from Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA) Member Questionnaire which expounds on such masquerades and is a good introduction to this well entrenched and choreographed trick. Of course, duping the other health related organizations to do their dirty work is amply described in: Alternative Medicine Unwittingly Being Used In The Battle To Restrict Access To Nutrients

CONTROLLED OPPOSITION GROUPS

Just to keep of balance they will throw a few crumbs to keep the uninformed confused and forever going in circles as I suspect they did in one of their the baits: Codex Chairman Seeks to Thwart Pro Health Initiative

For a current example of these shenanigans the recent flurry over bill S. 3546 is a worthy study: The groups that see what this bill is at face value have this to say against this bill:

"This extremely flawed legislation will mandate needless FDA regulations that will treat supplements like drugs (repealing DSHEA), raise the price of supplements to consumers, and obligate supplement manufacturers, packers and distributors to notify the FDA of serious adverse events reports (AERs) associated with the use of a dietary supplement that result in death, a life-threatening experience, inpatient hospitalization, persistent or significant disability, congenital abnormality or birth defect, or an event that requires a medical or surgical intervention to prevent such outcomes. The bill's use of the words "associated with" rather than the words "caused by" could result in "guilt by association", whereby any serious adverse event experienced by any one of the 70% of Americans who consume dietary supplements could be attributed to their supplements rather than to their cigarette or alcohol use, prescription drug use, poor dietary habits, etc. As such, this bill could potentially destroy the availability of effective dietary supplements in America by associating their usage with serious health events."

As the politically active voice of the healthcare practitioner and their patients, AAHF sees S. 3546 as part of a bigger picture that would like to treat dietary supplements more like pharmaceuticals and not as food as it currently stands. We believe that as soon as you accept differential treatment between dietary supplements (as concentrated nutrient forms) and conventional foods, you have given up very valuable ground.

S. 3546 would also discourage consumers from properly submitting their adverse events. Consumers should be discussing their adverse event reactions (especially "serious adverse events" as per the bill) with their healthcare practitioner rather than just sending a complaint to the manufacturer or retailer. There is a serious potential for abuse of the system and supplements could easily be blamed in place of things as divergent as pharmaceutical drugs, recreational drugs, genetic sensitivities, food intolerances, alcohol abuse, etc. A healthcare professional is crucial to determining the adverse event and ensuring that needless blame is not pointed towards the wrong substance.

Thanks Cheri, for the input, much appreciated, it sure smells like it.

Hi Chris

CRN and CFH are both pharma backed and enemies to health-freedom, there is no doubt.

Hi Chris:

I agree with you. They are so desperate to hang us they would have us self incriminate no matter how flimsy the evidence might be.

Yes I did see this Shelley, and thanks for the kind comment. Think it to be another attempt to find adverse reactions from the extraordinarily safe nutritional products as currently that is where they keep coming up short. Suspect the idea is to add more scrutiny not unlike the junk science that is all the rage to debunk vitamins etc. Have forwarded this to others for comment. as well.

Hi Chris,

I just received an email form Citizens for Health asking for support for US Senate Bill 3546, The Dietary Supplement and Nonprescpritopn Drug Consumer Act, which would require that manufacturers nofigy the FDA of all serious adverse events for OTC drugs and dietary supplements reported to them. Citizens for Health states that the bill will show serious commitment to comnsumer safety and protection and it includes appropriate safeguards so that unjustified burdens are not places on these responsible companies. It will emphasize how well-regulated the dietary supplement industry is and will show that supplements are not only safe, but make them safer.

Finally they include a link to The Council for Responsible Nutrition's site covering "Myths & Facts" about mandatory adverse event reporting for supplements. After reading this page, I am still not certain if this is legitimate or something the big pharma co's have sooked up to further sabotage supplements. Are you aware of this?
Best regards and thanks for you excellent site.
