Mobile Phones Increase Tumor Risk, Study Says

Thu Oct 14, 1:38 AM ET

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Ten or more years of mobile phone use increases the risk of developing acoustic neuroma, a benign tumor on the auditory nerve, according to a study released on Wednesday by Sweden's Karolinska Institute.

The risk was confined to the side of the head where the phone was usually held and there were no indications of increased risk for those who have used their mobile for less than 10 years, the Karolinska Institute said in a statement.

The institute, one of Europe's largest medical universities and a clinical and biomedical research center, awards the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine.

"At the time when the study was conducted only analog mobile phones had been in use for more than 10 years and therefore we cannot determine if there results are confined to use of analog phones or if the results would be similar also after long-term use of digital (GSM) phones," it said.

The mobile phone market is now dominated by GSM phones, which replaced the bulkier and less advanced analog phones in many markets the mid- and late-1990s.

The mobile phone industry has said there is no scientific evidence of negative health effects from use of mobile phones.

The Karolinska Institute said 150 people with acoustic neuroma and 600 healthy people participated in the study.

"The risk of acoustic neuroma was almost doubled for persons who started to use their mobile at least 10 years prior to diagnosis," the institute said.

"When the side of the head on which the phone was usually held was taken into consideration, we found that the risk of acoustic neuroma was almost four times higher on the same side as the phone was held and virtually normal on the other side."

Finland's Nokia (news - web sites) is the world's biggest mobile phone maker.

Other large producers include Motorola of the United States, South Korea (news - web sites)'s Samsung Electronics, Germany's Siemens and Swedish-Japanese joint venture Sony Ericsson (news - web sites).

Global mobile phone sales have been booming as thousands of new users sign up every day and existing subscribers replace their old handsets with new ones, capable of taking pictures or playing music.

Here is a commentary on the recent (Jan, 25th, 2011) Public Participation Meeting (PPM) on Fluoride in the City of London, Ontario. His lack of knowledge on chemistry of the toxic wastes used to fluoridate water could embarrass even a high school student never mind his own profession. He blatantly violated his "duty to public welfare" as... [read more]

I think this was the same article that I responded to on another list. Unless someone wants it, I won't go into all of it again, except to say this- the last 18 months have proven to me beyond any shadow of personal doubt that the dangers of using a cellphone are very REAL.

I am presently experiencing apparent reversal of my cellphone induced problems by using an LG phone that has a very easy to use hands free option. I now almost never hold it up against my head. In fact I almost never hold it at all, using it most of the time in my truck while connected to a hands free mic and speaker. I have now learned to make it dial a number by voice command.

I keep a pager so folks can page me instead of leaving the phone on in my pocket. If I must carry the phone, I turn it off and have my pager. My pager number is on my voice mail message. If someone thinks this is too much trouble, then that's tough. I'm not killing myself over anyone's convenience, including my own.

What are the symptoms? What is the specific complaint that leads to the discovery of this tumor?

I developed a problem where I could hear my pulse in my right ear very loudly. It was very distracting and annoying. This was in addition to pain and tingling in my hands, arms and neck. I would also feel brain fogged from using the phone beside my head.

As I have been using my LG phone in the manner I just described in my previous post, this (the pulse noise) has been going away.

My arm pains have been gone for several weeks now. I can still feel a tingle in my hands when I handle an "on" phone. As I have not used the phone against my head except rarely, the brain fogged sensation has not recently happened on those rare occasions.

I'm convinced that the damage and sensitivity is cumulative but largely reversible when caught in time and behavior is modified.

I am researching the effects of cell phone usage.
How helpful is an earplug?
Does it lessen the intensity of the EMF's?

The radiation still travels up the wire...it's better but not total protection. Check out the BIOPRO Cell Chip...it neutralizes the radiation so it passes through the body and doesn't damage the cells.

Er, no, the BIOPRO Cell Chip does no such thing. It's a clumsy attempt to part you and your money.

The 'science' on the website is ludicrous and invokes scientific jargon which you clearly do not understand at all. And I guess you're one of BIOPRO's 'technology consultants' (= snakeoil salesperson), too.

So no doubt you can point us to some peer-reviewed literature showing the efficacy of your product.
Not the comedy, meaningless graph you present on your website.
