Water fluoridation debate: The Canadian Dental Association Insists It Prevents Tooth Decay.

In the March 17, 2007 London Free Press "The Canadian Dental Association insists it prevents tooth decay" Dr. Farrell again spouts off form both sides of his mouth.... Since science cannot show benefits of poisoning our water he wants to establish a provincial fluoridation propaganda office.

The fact is "excess amounts of Fluoride" can in fact cause death! This is not an "emotional issue" as he contends it is a matter of life and death for some and a health risk for most!

See: Contrary to the Rhetoric Water Fluoridation Damages Teeth & Health

He conveniently overlooks the 1999 update of Dr. Lockers report: "Benefits and Risks of Water Fluoridation"? In the Executive summary of this report it is quoted: "The magnitude of the effect is not large in absolute terms, is often not statistically significant and may not be of clinical significance." And "Canadian studies do not provide systematic evidence that water fluoridation is effective in reducing decay in contemporary child populations."

Dr. Farrell has shown his incompetence time and time again as he simply ignores the Fluoride toxicology and medical data. It amazes me that the city of London continues to ignore the real heath concerns by seeking council form the dental profession, who in the main have no toxicology education and only superficial medical knowledge!

Finally oral health is not the be all and end all. The risks and benefits must include short and long term health issues too. Farrell carefully and knowingly misleads the reader by deflecting the issue of water Fluoridation effects to that of topical application, which is completely a different issue, when he "recommends a child use only a pea-sized amount of toothpaste and kids under three, fluoride-free toothpaste." Conveniently forgetting the effects of fluoride in the water. For his information a pea-size toothpaste contains 0.5mg of Fluoride and according to British Dental Association (Volume 186, No. 9, May 8 1999) 72% is absorbed while brushing that means if the child brushes twice a day with a typical 1,450 ppm Fluoride toothpaste than 0.72mg will be ingested. This far exceeds US poison warning levels! All US fluoride toothpaste must carry a poisons symbol, with a warning to contact the nearest poisons unit if more than a pea-sized amount of toothpaste is swallowed. And should the child swallow, as many can due to reflexive action, the ingestion will be 0.86mg if one of the two daily brushings is swallowed thus far exceeding the safe limit Farrell alludes too.

Water fluoridation debate heats up
The Canadian Dental Association Insists It Prevents Tooth Decay.

The heated issue of water fluoridation is back on the public radar, but this time with a new consumer twist.

Debate over whether adding fluoride to drinking water helps to prevent tooth decay has raged for years, even though the Canadian Dental Association says years of research have proven it does.

Now, the public health board serving the London region is asking Queen's Park establish a provincial fluoridation office to serve the public for information on the issue.

The request was triggered by conflicting information in the media about the effects of fluoridation, with one doctor's column suggesting excess amounts can cause death.

"Fluoride is a very emotional, very controversial subject," said Neil Farrell, Middlesex-London health unit's director of dental services.

While the Canadian Dental Association says more than 50 years of research prove the safety and effectiveness of fluoride at preventing tooth decay, opponents of fluoridation are strong and loud, Farrell said.

Farrell told his board this week such information can create concern and confusion, and that's why establishing a central office is essential.

"Questions are arising throughout the province."

He said the fluoridation office would evaluate Ontario data, provide the latest scientific research about fluoride and keep track of concerns.

About 70 per cent of Ontario's population, including London, has access to fluoridated municipal water.

The Ontario Association of Public Health Dentistry is making the push to create the office, which might employ one person on contract, Farrell said. The local health unit is urging other health boards to support establishing the office, which would be funded by the province.

Farrell is uncertain when such an office could be ready.

"One of the problems that's happened already is you're not sure which ministry you're talking about (to fund). If it (opened) within six months, I'd be very happy."

Farrell said the health unit's position is fluoride protects oral health. About one in eight children suffers tooth decay.

Farrell recommends a child use only a pea-sized amount of toothpaste and kids under three, fluoride-free toothpaste.

Democracy At Work? - PPM On Fluoride
Here is a commentary on the recent (Jan, 25th, 2011) Public Participation Meeting (PPM) on Fluoride in the City of London, Ontario. The meeting started with a strong pro fluoride stance form the City engineer. His lack of knowledge on chemistry of the toxic wastes used to fluoridate water could embarrass even a high school student never mind his own profession. He blatantly violated his "duty to public welfare" as... [read more]

70 of Ontario's population has access to fluoridated water? Nazi German concentration camps, where fluoride was first used in drinking water, had 100 of their population having access to fluoridated water. With more communities starting to question the validity of fluoridation it is no wonder shills like Farrell are calling for a new propaganda tool he calls a fluoride information office. Sad to think that a wasteful propaganda office is preferable to a complete and totally unbiased study of fluoride that would once and for all settle the debate. Why do I think they will prefer the propaganda office?
