Originally the following report was written for the Kingston Coalition Group hence the references within - I thought it important and timely to send as is to all.
It is imperative that we all support these brave souls as they have historically sacrificed much monetarily and personally.
With permission, also included one of our confidential Friends of Freedom International & the Canadian Coalition for Health Conference Call Recording. This will ramp up and introduce many to the inner workings of politics and our work.

Trip to Parliament Hill, Ottawa
This week’s trip to Ottawa was done as a delegation of 4 under the auspices of the Canadian Coalition of Health Freedom. This is the organization created in the late 90’s as the umbrella for numerous groups and associations concerned about Health Canada’s repression of Health freedoms and access to Dietary Food Supplements. Trueman Tuck of Belleville has consistently gone to Ottawa several times a year for about 11 years and is widely recognized and respected as a voice for our industry.The other members of the delegation were Dr. David Rowland, owner of Vitamost and founder of the RNC (Reg, Nutritional Consulting Course) from New Brunswick; Howard Phelan (Business Owner), organic farmer from Orangeville, Ontario and myself.
We had a brief planning meeting upon our arrival in Ottawa and then off to Parliament Hill starting with an hour long session with Dr. Colin Carrie, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health. The format of each session was the same. We each introduced ourselves giving a brief explanation of concern and we had a handout of the current issues to discuss, a copy of which is included.
The four of us worked extremely well together. Certainly, Trueman’s grasp and clarity around the issues and facts is extraordinary.
We had sessions with the following MP’s, Dr Colin Carrie (MP Cons.), Stephen Greene (Senator Cons), Kevin Sorenson (Cons. MP Alberta), Dr Carolyn Bennett (Liberal Health Critic), Peter Milliken (Liberal, Speaker of House), Daryl Kramp (MP Cons. Belleville), David Tilson (MP Cons. Ont.), Brent Rathgeher (MP Cons. Alberta), Rob Oliphant (Lib. Don Valley West MP), Wayne Easter (Lib. PEI Agriculture Critic).Main impressions from our meetings:
There is real political concern over C-6 eliciting Bill C-51, 52 type of grassroots uprising. There is not a big confidence about it making through. But continue to let your MP know your wishes.
There is uneasiness and concern about Health Canada’s behaviour. All MP’s were shocked by the Raids and upset by the proof of the indirect harassment of certain companies e.g. writing Advertiser’s like Macleans and telling the magazine that the company is under prosecution when no charges have been made.
The coalition was asked to draft a letter for a Liberal MP to help him tell his constituents what is going on.
The phrase “Natural Health Product” is now totally linked to the Drug Categories and a reaffirmation of “Foods are not Drugs” is needed. “Dietary Food Supplements” in its own category seems more appropriate and do-able.
The new Minister of Health, Leona Agluhark is known for her “consensus” style of governing and welcomes the range of view points apparently.Terry’s instincts and experience about using courier, Registered mail to the Minister, Dr Colin Carrie etc. is accurate. Emails and faxes are screened by levels of Aides. Dr Carrie did affirm his interest in receiving direct communication about any Health Canada Inspector activity or Consumer distress at the loss of product in market place. Let’s make up a package.
We were asked when we would return and were told end of May, prior to summer recess. One MP noted contact with the CHFA and said they have no concerns about legislation. No one else noted any contact with another Voice in the industry.
The experience of going into the Government and opposition lobbies (behind the drapes on either side of Parliament) was interesting. The conservatives were paranoid that our host David Tilson would get in “big trouble” for having us there. The Liberals on the other hand were gregarious, welcoming, no problem.
Having the results of Canadian “Death by” statistics was very useful to see on a graph what the percentages of deaths were caused by. Death by Food Supplement is less than being hit by a meteorite!
All in all I would say it was very successful and we are in a unique position to make trips up to Ottawa. I feel that there are other groups that came together over Bill C-51 that we might encourage to communicate with us. I do not have contact names and emails but groups that were very active last spring should know about this initiative. Perhaps some of you have those emails, etc.Trueman has an amazing technology set-up whereby hundreds of thousands can be emailed or faxed with a button pushed. He needs volunteer help with data entry to keep lists as current as possible. Anyone interested?
This is a quick update. Look forward to our April 15th meeting. Thank you all for the support; I represented our Kingston Coalition Chapter with every visit! We will continue to keep the Faith that we deserve our access to Nature created food supplements to keep our bodies healthy for the great spirits that we are.

April 3, 2009 Dear Peter,
I wanted to write and thank you for making the time in your busy schedule to see our delegation of the Canadian Coalition for Health Freedom. We were also able to have excellent meetings with Conservatives, Dr. Colin Carrie, David Tilson, Brent Rathgeher, Kevin Sorenson, and Liberals, Dr. Carolyn Bennett, Rob Oliphant and Wayne Easter.It was a busy but very productive two days. Again, our Kingston Coalition group is impressed that your personal ethic as an MP always makes time for us. One of our members, Anita Pennell, lives in Amherstview and has been on Scott Reid’s meeting request list since July 08 with no success. This experience is repeated across the country according to our reports. This is such a fundamental of accountability and results in such a jaded opinion of Party Politics.
Again, our objective is to affirm that foods and food supplements are not drugs and deserve a protected category of their own separated forever from the Pharmaceutical legislation and regulation. Historically, Dietary Food Supplements come from Mother Nature while Pharmaceuticals come from the Petroleum By-Product Industry.
Another interesting phenomenon noted before and since the 1998 Standing Committee on Health is that individuals who bring criticism against Health Canada very often end up with a Revenue Canada Audit. Two of our delegation of this week who have had high public profiles against Health Canada are under current Revenue Canada scrutiny. In 1998 it was such a pattern that the then honourable Anne McLellan assured all Standing Committee Witnesses that she personally would handle any Audit request. No one from that cycle had a problem. I personally use Collins Blay Accounting for my Tax Returns and normally would never anticipate an Audit. I will notify you, though, if anything happens to me in this regard.
As a health practitioner, I wonder what studies Health Canada is doing monitoring the effects on individuals being “Scanned” through security numerous times a day. We had 16 scans in two days.
On a personal note as an interested History Buff, I loved being in the Speaker’s Chambers. What a magnificent office of our Canadian History! Thank you for doing justice to such a key role.
