Restoration of Hawaiian Kingdom - Bush Asked To Cooperate

After having declared the independence of Hawai'i two years ago, Edmund Keli'i Silva Jr., heir to the throne of the archipelago's monarchy has now asked president George W. Bush to back up his words with deeds and consent to the restoration of the Hawaiian monarchy.

In a letter to the U.S. President, Edmund Keli'i Silva refers to what President Bush told the United Nations in a speech on 14 September:

"In the long run, the best way to protect the religious freedom, and the rights of women and minorities, is through institutions of self-rule, which allow people to assert and defend their own rights. All who stand for human rights must also stand for human freedom."

Keli'i Silva asks whether Bush is willing to fulfill that commitment with action in the case of the Hawaiian people, whose governing monarchy was overthrown by the action of American forces 112 years ago.

The illegality of the takeover was acknowledged in a joint resolution of the Senate and the House of Representatives in 1993. Congress, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the illegal overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii on January 17, 1893, acknowledges the historical significance of this event which resulted in the suppression of the inherent sovereignty of the Native Hawaiian people and expresses its commitment to acknowledge the ramifications of the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii, in order to provide a proper foundation for reconciliation between the United States and the Native Hawaiian people.

The goal of the Hawaiians is the restoration of the archipelago as a free and independent nation under its own government based on the traditional monarchy. The former U.S. military bases are to be converted to civilian use and the nation's economy is be put on a solid footing with land ownership returned to the crown and a proposed flat tax on income.

Perhaps this would be a good time to review and adopt some of the economic proposals of Silvio Gesell (The Natural Economic Order). Gesell, a German/Argentinian businessman and outsider economist proposed to base economic security and prosperity of the people on common land ownership and on a currency that is not subject to the constant drain of interest payments. It is interest taking center stage in our modern nations' economies, which forces the unnatural continuous growth model on us, hurting our future prospects of survival.

In a not-so-veiled allusion to President Bush's desire to reform the world by going to war, Keli'i Silva asks that Hawaiians' desire for peaceful human progress be given due consideration:

I also encourage you to consider the potential service a non-aligned nation based on spiritual principles can provide to the Human Family. There is no need for the Armageddon scenario that you have so brilliantly brought into focus. The Human Family can choose a different path. A non-aligned nation seeking only the greatest good for the Family can assist in identifying that path and unifying the Family to choose that path.

The designated Monarch of Hawai'i invites Bush to enjoy a great lu'au and traditional Hawaiian celebration with me, while we contemplate the incredible changes that are taking place in our world.

To many Americans, the thought of "losing" the string of pearls that is the Hawai'ian archipelago may seem strange, even preposterous. Yet, there is an indigenous population desiring to return to independence and self-rule. And persistence is known to bring forth the most unlikely results...

For the record, here is a communication from the Kingdom's Ministry of Public Relations with copies of the letter to Bush, and more information about the Hawaiian desire to re-gain independence.

"KAMEHAMEHA RETURNS TO RECLAIM HAWAIIAN ISLAND KINGDOM IN SPECIAL CORONATION"

Honolulu, HI. (11/30/05) - The royal lineages of King Kamehameha, the first Hawaiian monarch; High Chief Kamehameha Nui of Maui Island; and Queen Liliu'okalani, the last reigning Hawaiian Monarch are reaching out from the past to re-establish the Hawaiian Island Kingdom to it's former glory. All of these lineages, together with those of several chiefly lines connected to all of the Hawaiian Islands, converge in the genealogy of Edmund Keli'i Silva, Jr., as confirmed by the House of Nobles of the Kingdom of Hawai'i. As a result, these same nobles sought out Mr. Silva and asked him to serve as the next reigning monarch of the Hawaiian Islands in an effort to restore the kingdom to its once independent state. His website at www.hawaiiankingdom.org, his personal royal seal depicting him wearing Kamehameha III's original royal feather cape and feather headdress (which is also stamped on his royal stationary), his families royal seal on file at Bishop museum, letters to President Bush, UN Secretary Kofi Anan, speeches to Hawaiians worldwide, and this personal interview, provides clues to his answer. Simply, "Yes."

Having accepted this responsibility, his majesty has spent the past several months traveling throughout the Hawaiian Islands speaking to his subjects on matters relating to social needs, health coverage, economics, agriculture, political formation and representation, land alienation and development, cultural preservation, poverty, citizenship, US occupation, and many other important issues.

In a personal interview with his majesty, he explains that while many of his Hawaiian and non-Hawaiian subjects since 9/11 have serious concerns and questions regarding the safety and security of Hawaii under the new system, he reassuringly reminds them that the newly restored Kingdom of Hawai'i will be neutral politically (similar to Switzerland), and therefore safer than it is within the US system. "Pearl Harbor would have never happened, and the current nuclear missile threat from Korea would not be an issue, if Hawai'i was demilitarized, independent from the US, and politically neutral."

His majesty Edmund Keli'i Silva, Jr., also considered the issue of an economic land base for the new kingdom, and is in the process of negotiating the return of all Kingdom government and crown lands (ceded land trust) and their lease rent revenues, which are currently being collected by the US and state governments, and are said to number in the hundreds of billions of dollars each year. With that goal in mind, he has already obtained agreements from several private landowners in Hawai'i, who have voluntarily turned over in excess of 250,000 acres of lands to the new kingdom in preparation for the restoration. "Hawaiians and non-Hawaiians alike have volunteered to help in their own individual or group capacities. With Akua (God) leading the way, all things are possible for the people of Hawai'i and the restoration of the Kingdom."

His majesty also has plans in place for US military bases that have been closed in Hawai'i. He plans to open them once again, but convert them from places of war, to places of peace, healing and new beginnings for people who are homeless, overcrowded in their present homes, or dependent on state or federal social programs. Within the bounds of these new "pu'uhonua" (places of refuge), people will be able to begin again with new land and homes opened up not only for these new residents, but also for students, doctors, social workers, psychologists, and other researchers and professionals who wish to offer their services to the people living there in exchange for housing. The remainder of military bases currently occupied, according to his majesty, will be eventually opened up for Hawaiian families living elsewhere in the world who desire to return home. "I see my people everyday, and they tell me that they are suffering under the present US system. Many of them are sick, homeless, impoverished, and hungry. It is about time that the kingdom return to its former glory so they can be helped. Out of the restoration flows the healing from Akua for Hawai'i's people."

Greater health through free universal medical care, reduction of poverty, homelessness and housing shortages through the opening up of lands now occupied by or closed down by the US military will ensure that people will no longer be landless. Many of these lands and lands under the ceded lands trust will be used not only as an economic base in the form of lease rents, but also will be made available to agriculturalists. "It is estimated that if all of the ancient fishponds were once again put into operation, they could feed every person currently residing in Hawai'i today on an ongoing basis."

This move, according to his majesty, together with the implementation of a flat income tax, and the opening up of lands to diversified agriculture, including the growing of crops that can be used for cattle feed and other grains, will move Hawai'i closer to economic independence, and the lowered cost of living that is needed. "Our cultural sites and ancient graveyards are being disturbed daily, many areas are over developed, and over populated. More and more we are dependent on foreign goods, with higher price tags at the checkstand as a result. Under the new monarchy, Hawaii independence naturally leads to personal independence, which in turn leads to economic independence for all of Hawai'i's people, both Hawaiian and non-Hawaiian alike."

Certainly, as many people already know, internationally and legally, the Hawaiian Kingdom still exists. This is supported by numerous international treaties with countries around the world instituted in the late 1700s to 1800s. His majesty Edmund Keli'i Silva Jr., received numerous letters from various world leaders stating that they support the restoration of the Hawaiian Kingdom, and acknowledge him as the new king via inheritance and genealogy. Several world leaders have committed to attending the coronation scheduled in Hawai'i for early next year, which should prove to be a glorious and happy event for Hawaiians everywhere, and many others of non-Hawaiian decent who live here, and who chose to remain after the restoration. "We welcome all people of any decent who currently reside here in Hawai'i to support the new kingdom, abide by its laws, and to apply for citizenship once it is offered to them."

Native Hawaiians around the world will be offered automatic citizenship, according to his majesty, with some desiring to retain the citizenship of their home country. Those people will have to apply for visas and show proof of passport in order to remain here. "Of those that wish to remain, let us all put aside our differences and paddle together in the same direction, to obtain that which has up to this point eluded us, because we have been paddling in different directions while sitting in the same canoe. We will never get anywhere that way. It is my prayer that we can come together as a people and restore the kingdom as our ancestors want us to, because it is not only pono, (righteous) but it is time."

In order to emphasise this point, His majesty has sent a letter to President Bush in October 2005 in which he reminds the President of his September 14, 2005 speech to the United Nations, in which he commits the United States and himself to promoting freedom, human rights, the rights of minorities and institutions of self-rule. It is in this spirit of commitment to noble principles that his majesty asks President Bush whether he will fulfill that commitment with action in the Hawaiian case. To President Bush he states: "I invite you to enjoy a great lu’au (feast) and traditional Hawaiian celebration with me, while we contemplate the incredible changes that are taking place in our world. Later, you can come to my coronation and walk side by side with me, while we enjoy the unfolding of miracles."

A copy of this letter was sent to over 4,000 separate individuals or organizations, which included the international leaders of all worldwide government entities and island states; UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and the entire membership of the UN, including all consulate members; All Tribal Native American and Native Alaskan Entities and all worldwide Hawaiian cultural, business, educational or professional organizations; All fifty (50) US Governors, the entire Senate and House of Representative membership; several University Journalism Departments; and over 2,000 local and international media outlets in October and November 2005.

In a separate cover letter to world leaders (dated 11/29/05), his majesty writes "We are planning a lua’u (great feast) and celebration following the formal ceremony, during which we shall take the opportunity to introduce ourselves and discuss matters of reconciliation and peace. Respectfully, Hawai’i shall be forever and always an independent and neutral nation. Never again occupied by any foreign or domestic power. I am also looking forward to discussing various treaties; such as; friendship, economics, navigation and commerce between our nations. Let us join together in celebration, as the kingdom of Hawai’i is once again restored to its true glory as a light unto the world. Mahalo for your time and support. I look forward to your reply, as we embark upon this great endeavor together."

Finally, in a cover letter sent to all Hawaiians worldwide, his majesty addresses his subjects in both Hawaiian and English in which he states: "At this time, I am asking you all for your help with this great burden, because if we join together as a strong bundle, we cannot break. If we travel the same path, with the same burden, and the same wisdom, with all of our outstretched hands to God together, we will succeed! We cannot fail, because we seek the same path as our high queen, Lili’uokalani, and our ancestors on the Ku’e (resistance) documents who opposed the overthrow. The righteous path of the restoration of the monarchy of the true kingdom of Hawai’i." He closes with "Working together with one voice, one strength, one mind, one kingdom." This letter, together with the words to the new kingdom chant entitled "Ku I Ka Mana" (The Mana Rises up) encourages Hawaiians to find the hidden mana (spiritual power) not only in the elements of nature surrounding them, but in their ancestors, the old chiefs and in God above, who will deliver them, as the mana of all Hawai'i rises up once more! Why? Because Kamehameha has returned to reclaim Hawai'i!

Text of Letter to President Bush:

Friday, October 7, 2005

Pelekikena George W. Bush
Ka Hale Ke’oke’o
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue
Washington, D.C. 20500

Aloha Pelekikena Bush:

Aloha ‘oukou. In your speech to the United Nations on Wednesday, September 14, you stated:

“In the long run, the best way to protect the religious freedom, and the rights of women and minorities, is through institutions of self-rule, which allow people to assert and defend their own rights. All who stand for human rights must also stand for human freedom.”

In this speech, you have committed yourself and your nation to noble principles. My question is whether you will fulfill that commitment with action.

The Apology Resolution, Public Law 103-150, acknowledged that the United States government cooperated in the illegal overthrow of the Kingdom government. Everything from that day, including the annexation of Hawai’i, is fruit from a poisoned tree. The only just and complete response to the illegal overthrow is the restoration of the Kingdom government.

The restoration process began the day Queen Liliu’okalani temporarily stepped aside to avoid bloodshed. In doing so, she relied on the United States government to reverse the illegal actions of its agents and restore the Kingdom. The Hawaiian people have waited patiently for 112 years for the Queen’s faith in the United States to be manifested. During those years, the Kingdom lived on in the hearts and minds of the Hawaiian people, while their government was in abstentia.

The time has come to fulfill the Queen’s prophecy that the nation would be restored. I have returned to Hawai’i to complete that mission. I am traveling amongst the people to bring the glad tidings that the Kingdom is restored and finding joy everywhere. We are in the process of putting the governmental structures in place, arranging appropriate financial support, and preparing for the transition to independence.

I invite you to join with us in a cooperative process to bring that mission to a rapid conclusion. I look forward to sitting with you to discuss the restoration of an independent Hawaiian Archipelago. I look forward to addressing your Congress and extending a hand of friendship in the spirit of forgiveness.

Your statement to the United Nations is presented in the words of your Founding Fathers. Their commitment to freedom and self determination led to the creation of your nation.

I encourage you to make the transition as easy and seamless as possible. We know that there will be goals and timetables. After more than 100 years, we are somewhat impatient. Yet we are mindful that a large ship takes time to change direction. As long as you accept the goal of restoration, I am sure we can work out the details together.

President Nixon could go to China. I trust that President Bush can come to Hawai’i. I invite you to enjoy a great lu’au and traditional Hawaiian celebration with me, while we contemplate the incredible changes that are taking place in our world.

Later, you can come to my coronation and walk side by side with me, while we enjoy the unfolding of miracles. The actual date and time of the coronation will be sent to you under separate cover as there are many arrangements that need to be made. Also under separate cover I will be sending you a personal and private message that only you will understand. I trust you will make arrangements to ensure that message reaches you and inform me of that arrangement as soon as possible.

‘O au no,

October 2005
Open letter to all Hawaiians Worldwide
(English translation)

Greetings to all,

My name is Edmund Keli’i Silva Jr. Like you, my ancestors came here from elsewhere during the times of old. I am Hawaiian. My genealogical line leads back to Kamehameha Nui of Maui and Kamehameha the first, the king of Hawai’i. From the times after the overthrow of the rightful constitutional monarchial government of Hawai’i, the ancestors of the great chiefly ruling houses hid our genealogies because they greatly feared for the lives of our chiefly families. However, now is the time to reveal many heavenly things.

About thirty years ago, a man from Ka’u named Samuel Kaluna Jr. and certain Hawaiian groups began a search for the rightful chiefly heir with the proper bloodlines extending to the highest houses of the Hawaiian kings of old. They desired to restore the Kingdom of Hawai’i. About five years ago they finished their search, and established that my chiefly geneology was correct for the throne. Therefore, they went to my parents house on O’ahu because they wanted to show them these secret things. After much discussion, they asked my parents for their help in restoring the rightful king to the throne of the kingdom of Hawai’i because they strongly believed it was time to reveal the rightful chiefs and the time of reconciliation of all of Hawaii’s sovereignty groups, and all of the people in Hawai’i. My parents agreed, and I was asked to serve as that rightful king of Hawai’i.

At this time, I am asking you all for your help with this great burden, because if we join together as a strong bundle, we cannot break. If we travel the same path, with the same burden, and the same wisdom, with all of our outstretched hands to God together, we will succeed! We cannot fail, because we seek the same path as our high queen, Lili’uokalani, and our ancestors on the Ku’e documents who opposed the overthrow. The righteous path of the restoration of the monarchy of the true kingdom of Hawai’i.

Working together with one voice, one strength, one mind, one kingdom,

Readers' Comments

Two comments received by email from friends in the US, which I would like to share with other readers...

Mike says about the economic base for a government:
Henry George, from the former America, presented some thinking in this regard, that had some compelling features; however, there are strong contrasting arguments (based, very often, on the most inductive powers of the string of axioms that make up Laissez-Faire, free-market economics, suggesting the single tax, or removal of land for the private ownership in the means of production is an unnecessary prescription for promotion of either liberty, prosperity, life, or the progress of civilization.

N. discusses the historical roots of the Hawaiian monarchy in light of European and US intervention:
Sepp: There is good reason to support sovereignty and land reform for native Hawaiians, yet certain historical facts might be considered among Hawaiian people concerning the "establishment" of the "kingdom" of Hawaii and in particular King Kamehameha.

Hawaii was a British Colony. King Kamehameha was "crowned" by the British. He was given superior weapons by the British over his rivals of the other islands and leading a savage and bloody campaign, killed them off one by one, bringing the entire archipelago under his (read British) rule.

I have seen The king's royal outfit and crown, which is on display rarely at the old Honolulu govt building (forget building's proper name) The garment and aromour is a completely foreign artifact designating the "king" a vassal of the British monarch. Anyone who has seen it with even a modicum of knowledge of European history would be able to identify the typical symbolism found among many royal houses of the "old country". the main "symbolism" festooning the royal garment is very many Maltese crosses.

The US civil war intervened in Britain's greater securing of its outpost in Hawaii and with British and Vatican defeat in the US civil war, our own militaristic imperialism unleashed under new federal power challenged British domination in the pacific.

During this period (1860's) Japan also became a mark for competing British and American colonial aspirations, although our own brand of imperialism under the Monroe Doctrine and other aspects of policy, would be characterized at foiling European colonialism - propaganda for domestic consumption mostly but also the matter bears much more compllcated analysis I won't get into in an e-mail! Read Christopher Hitchens' book Blood, Class and Empire for more on US Brit relations and "special ralationship".

The classic model of imperialism of the Roman and later British model is paramount in both japan and hawaii. Back the weakest side, or at least one faction, divide and conquer. in both cases king Kamehameha and the Meji emperor were tools of the colonizers. The meji restoration is the most extreme example, a fascinating subject not permitted to be discussed in Japan much. Yes, the Japanese emperor is a vassal of the British Monarch to this day. This had little if nothing to do with Japan's modernization, but more with colonization and the defeat of the more powerful and mercantilely based shogunate was actually a big leap back for the Japanese people (this is the subject of revisionism in the country today and one reason certain parties in Nippon didn't like me very much when I started talking about it a long time ago I suspect)

In the case of japan the US lost out (now we've got it back big time as a colony) but "gained" in Hawaii. Hawaii will never become a truly independent nation until its strategic importance is no longer a factor. Unfortunately, Hawaii is still probably the most sought after strategic location per square foot at least, in the world, and all the great industrial powers continue to fight over it. There is a great deal of skull duggery in hawaii over this issue. I may be an ardent anti-imperialist, but also a realist based on experience.

The US just used brute force to annex Hawaii from British rule and proclaimed it a territory. After the civil war, there was intense anti-british sentiment and partiuclarly anything with a royal title attached to it was anathema. The so called sovereignty under the british flag, which the Hawaiians still wave as their own independence flag (it looks like the confederate flag) is a painful reality that cannot be divorced from its historical context and at the risk of being considered an adversary of Hawaiian sovereignty, which I most certainly am not, I think perhaps it would be healthy to discuss this as part of the formula for Hawaiian people's self determination and land reform.

If my collegues in Africa and parts of Asia saw anyone on this planet waving the union jack and proclaiming it represented sovereignty and freedom in the face of imperialism, they would probably puke.

Throwing out the principles of American democratic republicanism and adopting a foreign political system mostly abandoned by Europeans themselves as perhaps decadent and medieval, might be the subject of discussion among Hawaiians. I do not think that there is any historical or anthropological evidence that Hawaii was a unified "kindom" at all before European invasion.

Within this whole milieu, a comparison between the Fijian and Hawaiian experience is indepspensable, if not lengthy and innapporopriate for this too long e-mail. There are aspects of both British and US imperialism and the consequences we see today in both places that need comparison and contrast for both people's independent decision making but the powers that be are loath that these polynesian and melanesian peoples should get together and figure it out without my or our interference. There are pros and cons and things to consider from both experiences that are I think essential to the discussion

Of course this brief tract would upset many Hawaiians I am sure. It's up to them to decide for themselves, I just hate to see people get manipulated and screwed amidst the best of intentions all over again creating a battle ground of divisiveness between all Hawaiian people - fertile ground for conflict between the great powers again over title and holding.

Group: Don't rebury Hawaiian artifacts
Artifacts found in a Hawaiian lava tube should be put on display and studied, not buried, a group of native Hawaiians said Thursday. The artifacts were found in January by a pair of brothers who were hired to assess the safety of a cave 3 miles north of Kailua-Kona.
