Fluoride Accumulates in Pineal Gland

Fluoride, added to the water supply of many cities and counties and sold by WalMart in its nursery water, has a tendency to accumulate not only in developing teeth causing discoloration, and in bones making them brittle. The mineral is associated with cancer and it also accumulates in the pineal gland, an important hormone control center, where it wreaks considerable havoc. Paul Connett of Fluoride Action Network comments on Jennifer Luke's research which was part of her PhD thesis and had just been published in Caries Research under the title: Fluoride Deposition in the Aged Human Pineal Gland.

Fluoride is a poison, yet we add it to our water and toothpaste and even call it a supplement, although it has no nutritional value. Its medicinal value - the prevention of tooth decay - is the official explanation for adding the toxic mineral to the water supply. But that value is far outweighed by its toxic side effects - amply documented by Paul Connett in his Statement of Concern.

Recent European Union legislation on food supplements lists fluoride as an essential element to offer for supplementation. This is somewhat ironic when contrasted with the European legislators' feigned concern over the putative toxicity of vitamins and their efforts to limit dosages of these vital nutrients in order to "protect public health".

We also use fluoride in many household items, such as non-stick frying pans, high-tech water repellent fabrics and others. Recently, at least some timid attempts to start assessing the disease burden caused by fluoride are under way. The Journal of Water Health carries an article on this research. Meanwhile in the US, the FDA has decided that fluoride should be allowed in bottled water, perhaps in deference to WalMart's offerings.

The use of fluoride for "health" reasons is one of the great insanities of our times. Could it be just by chance that the Germans and Russians both used fluoride to make prisoners stupid and docile or that the US government faced legal action over the toxic effects in the environment of this nuclear waste by-product?

Perhaps the push for 'enriching' our water and our foods with fluoride has some ulterior motive that has little to do with health. Be that as it may, the campaign for fluoridation is stil in full swing and health authorities are pushing the poison as if their monthly paychecks depended on it.

Jennifer Luke's PhD thesis on fluoride and its accumulation in the pineal gland - Paul Connett says that research might just be the scientific straw that breaks the camel's back:

- - -

Fluoride & the Pineal Gland: Study Published in Caries Research

The wheels of science grind very slowly. Finally, the first half of the work that was the subject of Jennifer Luke's Ph.D. thesis; presentation in Bellingham, Washington (ISFR conference) in 1998 and a videotaped interview I had with her (see, has been published in Caries Research.

In my view this work is of enormous importance and could be (or should be) the scientific straw that breaks the camel's back of fluoridation.

When Luke found out that the pineal gland - a little gland in the center of the brain, responsible for a very large range of regulating activities (it produces serotonin and melatonin) - was also a calcifying tissue, like the teeth and the bones, she hypothesized it would concentrate fluoride to very high levels. The gland is not protected by the blood brain barrier and has a very high perfusion rate of blood, second only to the kidney.

Luke had 11 cadavers analyzed in the UK. As she predicted she found astronomically high levels of fluoride in the calcium hydroxy apatite crystals produced by the gland. The average was 9000 ppm and went as high as 21,000 in one case. These levels are at, or higher, than fluoride levels in the bones of people suffering from skeletal fluorosis. It is these findings which have just been published.

It is the ramifications of these findings which have yet to be published. In the second half of her work she treated animals (Mongolian gerbils) with fluoride at a crack pineal gland research unit at the University of Surrey, UK (so there is no question about the quality of this work). She found that melatonin production (as measured by the concentration of a melatonin metabolite in the urine) was lower in the animals treated with high fluoride levels compared with those treated with low levels.

Luke hypothesizes that one of the four enzymes needed to convert the amino acid tryptophan (from the diet) into melatonin is being inhibited by fluoride. It could be one of the two enzymes which convert tryptophan to serotonin or one of the two which convert serotonin to melatonin.

Significance? Huge. Melatonin is reponsible for regulating all kinds of activities and there is a vast amount of work investigating its possible roles in aging, cancer and many other life processes. The one activity that Luke is particularly interested in is the onset of puberty. The highest levels of melatonin ( produced only at night) is generated in young children. It is thought that it is the fall of these melatonin levels which acts like a biological clock and triggers the onset of puberty. In her gerbil study she found that the high fluoride treated animals were reaching puberty earlier than the low fluoride ones.

We know from recent studies - and considerable press coverage - that young girls are reaching puberty earlier and earlier in the US. Luke is not saying that fluoride (or fluoridation) is the cause but her work waves a very worrying red flag. Fluoride's role in earlier puberty needs more thorough investigation. Of an interesting historical note, in the Newburgh versus Kingston fluoridation trial (1945-1955), it was found that the girls in fluoridated Newburgh were reaching menstruation, on average, five months earlier than the girls in unfluoridated Kingston, but the result was not thought to be significant at the time (Schlessinger et al, 1956).

When one considers the seriousness of a possible interference by fluoride on a growing child's pineal gland (and for that matter, elderly pineal glands) it underlines the recklessness of fluoridation. The precautionary principle would say, as would basic common sense, that you don't take these kind of risks with our children for a benefit which, at best, amounts to 0.6 tooth surfaces out of 128 tooth surfaces in a child's mouth (Brunelle and Carlos, 1990, Table 6).

I have a copy of Luke's Ph.D. thesis and would be willing to share it with those who have a serious scientific interest in this issue. The other references cited above can be found in my Statement of Concern which is published on the FAN webpage:

The Fluoride Deception: How a Nuclear Waste Byproduct Made Its Way Into the Nation's Drinking Water

Toxic Teflon: Compounds from Household Products Found in Human Blood
DuPont and other companies use those synthetic compounds to make an extraordinarily wide range of products, including nonstick cookware (e.g, Teflon), grease-resistant food packaging (e.g., microwave popcorn and pizza boxes), stain-resistant fabrics and carpets (e.g., Stainmaster), shampoos, conditioners, cleaning products, electronic components, paints, firefighting foams, and a host of other artifacts of modern life. But like many "better things" produced by industrial chemistry, these products can have disastrous side effects.

Fluoridation of drinking water - the UK Soil Association's position
h. We consider that the practice of adding fluoride to drinking water is prophylactic treatment and is therefore in opposition to organic principles. As a result the Soil Association is opposed to the artificial fluoridation of water by water companies and also the legislation allowing this practice. We support the campaign by the National Pure Water Association for water companies to have the right not to fluoridate their water.

Fluoridation Doing More Harm Than Good, Studies Show
Pizzo and colleagues reviewed English-language fluoridation studies published from January 2001 to June 2006 and write, "Several epidemiological studies conducted in fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities suggest that [fluoridation] may be unnecessary for caries prevention." They also report that fluoride-damaged teeth spiked upwards to 51% from the 10-12% found over 60 years ago in 'optimally' fluoridated communities.

'Second Thoughts about Fluoride,' Reports Scientific American
After 3 years of scrutinizing hundreds of studies, a National Research Council (NRC) committee "concluded that fluoride can subtly alter endocrine function, especially in the thyroid -- the gland that produces hormones regulating growth and metabolism," reports Fagin.

Fagin quotes John Doull, professor emeritus of pharmacology and toxicology at the University of Kansas Medical Center, who chaired the NRC committee thusly, "The thyroid changes do worry me."

Readers' Comments

The article should be titled: "Americans drink poison to facilitate their induction into vulture capitalism that robs them of their economic Freedom." The article should point out that melatonin has the function of being an antioxidant in the brain, similar to the enzyme glutathione, both being impacted by fluoridation. These are the mechanisms of fluoride in the brain that results in Americans having severely impaired cognition, and many other problems like an epidemic of obesity.

Fluorine can chelated out of body tissues by the use of long term (3-4 months)high dosage Iodine therapy:

The other halides, Bromine and Chlorine, and heavy metals (!)are also removed:

Besides degrading the Melatonin and Serotonin production via the pineal, the production of endogenous tryptamines (natural psychedelics) is also impacted, dulling the perception of greater states of consciousness.

Iodine has been demonized for political and financial reasons.

The Japanese have a daily intake of Iodine about 100 times greater than the US "RDA".

It is now hypothesized that Iodine insufficiency may be a major risk factor for reproductive cancers, especially breast cancer.

I know of several individuals (my self included) who are experiencing greater physical energy and mental clarity after completing the 3 month

Is there a water filtration system that does remove fluoride?

Do you have any data about the concentrations of fluoride in foods that we should otherwise expect not be "fortified" with Fluoride? For example, I understand that most orange juice is made from oranges grown in the shadows of fertilizer plants around Tampa, and that the concentration of fluoride in the soils the oranges are grown in is extremely high. I've also read somewhere that canned foods are very high in fluoride, as are any "condensed" or cooked products where the water is boiled off or evaporated, concentrating whatever is found in the water.

I drink reverse-osmosis filtered water and use a non-fluoridated toothpaste, but I still feel a little stupid. My IQ has increased from 126 to 147 (which may be "statistically insignificant") since taking measures to avoid Fluoride 4 years ago. I'm wondering if I would be a genius if it weren't for fluoride :)

I have noticed that otherwise educated people, even with advanced degrees and doctorates have a certain lack of sense or curiousity. Though that could just be a byproduct of hyper-specialization, or a combination of factors. But I wonder if they are just addled with the chemicals being fed to them.

An ignorant and uninformed/educated population is easily controlled.

Simply entertain them and distract them, slowly poison them while you feed them.

Reverse Osmosis is the only way to get flouride out of your water - the cheapest is to get this water at a natural food store like Whole Foods in the US. RO purification systems are rather expensive, but completely worth it.

Because we had well-water when I grew up, the dentist had my mother give me flouride tablets to chew. Maybe this is the where my health problems all begin?

Posted by: gerry on March 2, 2007 09:14 PM

This is a puzzle for me...

Our entire family was raised on a farm in North Idaho with a purest water well. Actually two were drilled in the 1950's on our farm with two pumps to provide enough water for drinking and bathing so scarce. It was a pure spring water reservoir. No mineral or biological contaminants detected.

One thing I noticed is all of our family have tooth decay at a very high level using that water source. Water had the best flavor. My parents at 55 years of age are all using implanted teeth. All of my teeth at 35 are original with one root canal. But a history of weak teeth and fillings. If no dentist, I would have half of my teeth right now.

When I moved to the city where flouridation took place, teeth no longer had the rapid decay. So there is some truth to all of this.

I didn't drink much acidic juices either. Milk was my favorite as a kid and water.

Flouride is indeed a construcive or destructive element as it is so reactive.

Question to ask the universe whether it is a good or a bad reaction at a particular time?

It definitely helps teeth.

From what I understand... children with baby teeth may indeed benefit from flouridated water from the tap. The root as well as surface enamel of the tooth absorbs it and carries it to the enamel where needed.

As adults with mature 2nd set of teeth. Growth is over and probably best to consume water without flouride. But you still need flouride to react with surface enamel to keep the molecular structure strong.

Use a flouride rinse to swish about your teeth... then spit it out.

Don't know about pineal gland absorbtion... I will research that next.

Heard of reports of farm animals getting ill too... but this could be from constant refilling of water basin without dumping old water out first. Water evaporates and over time a dangerous level of flouride builds up. Just as salt in the Great Salt Lake.

I don't support or deny benefits of flouride treatment.

I do know that my families teeth rotted out on pure spring water.

Posted by: gavincurtis on May 11, 2007 05:57 AM

One final thing to think about.

Teeth wear down not because enamel is rubbing against enamel; think of it at the atomic level.

You are literally stripping electrons away. Nothing solid touching solid. It's electrons interacting with each other.

Flouride is the energy source to replenish the electrons.

We just need the ideal way to apply flouride to our teeth only.

To the roots and enamel for children. Adults on the exposed enamel.

Posted by: gavincurtis on May 11, 2007 06:15 AM

Actually, teeth are not made of fluoride but of majorly calcium. All fluoride does is harden the calcium that's there, making it more brittle in the process. It doesn't "replenish electrons" and certainly does not give teeth the material needed to grow or repair.

Being a dentist, Gavin, why don't you give us some actual references for your your contention that "It definitely helps teeth."

There are a lot of scientific publications that show mottling of teeth (fluoridosis) in children exposed to fluoride in water. How do you reconcile that teeth become discolored and brittle with "it helps teeth"?

Posted by: Sepp on May 11, 2007 09:15 AM

Flouride is a poison but Big Business makes money off this poison, so the FDA sits on its hands and reaps the tax benefits. After all, corporations and gov\'t are merely quid-pro-quo whorehouses sold to the highest bidder. When the gov\'t needs illegal wire-taps, Verizon and Sprint allow them secret rooms to listen in on calls. When Haliburton (and KBR) need more revenue, the gov\'t hands out no-bid contracts. When the gov\'t dislikes literature, Amazon and Wikipedia ban the book

For those who cannot figure out why people drinking non-fluoridated water have bad teeth, perhaps further digging is necessary. Fluoride is not needed for healthy teeth - proper diet is. Dr Weston A. Price, a dentist practicing in the 1930's, travelled all over the world seeking out primitive cultures that had not been touched by modern, "western" dietary staples. What he found were tribes and villages of people almost totally devoid of tooth decay. His travels and findings are documented in his book Nutrition and Physical Degeneration - just seeing the photographs taken of the people he met are well worth the time taken to find the book! is an excellent place to find information on tooth-protecting nutrition.

It was found that some deep water systems in Idaho are extremely high in natural fluoride.

So when you moved to the city, you may have been getting less!

My friend insists that stannous fluoride is safe and non-toxic whereas straight fluoride is a poison. Can someone please educate me on this. I have done some research into the matter, but when search "stannous fluoride" it seems that all I find is mainstream praises for the fluoridation of water.

The Dentists' secret society - "Delta Sigma Delta".

What roll has the "Delta Sigma Delta" played in Water Fluoridation ??? and are they still in control of the American Dental Society ???

In his book, "The Secret War and The Fluoride Conspiracy", British Dental Surgeon, Geoffrey E Smith writes about the sinister side of this secret organisation within the dental profession.

Their tentacles are into Australia, New Zealand, Canada, UK and Ireland. They also have members in the Dental wings of the CDC, FDA and WHO. They're all in the one "club", singing from the same songsheet.

In Australia, Dr. Geoffrey Smith has advised:

"Early in 1953, American Delta Sigs met with theit "brethren" in Sydney. A fortnight later, the New South Wales branch of the Australian Dental Association and the Dental Faculty at the University of Sydney, submitted an URGENT report to the Federal Government stating that steps should be taken immediately to introduce fluoridation in Sydney and other major cities around the Commonwealth."

He also wrote:

"Recently, it seems that New Zealand dentists have been disturbed by the unseen presence of DSD. A spokesman for the Hawkes Bay branch of the New Zealand Dental Association observed: "As long as membership of this body remains anonymous, it will be suspect and speculation as to it's real aims and objectives will occur within the rank and file of the Association."

You can find more info about the "DSD" at then click "Bulletin Board", then click the "Fluoride Forum" and look for the entry "Dental Secret Society - Delta Sigma Delta".

I think any water filters with activated charcoal will filter chemicals out of water. Including floride

By the way I have seen one water filter that connects to the faucet in the kitchen that adds floride to the water. So stay away from that one!!!

Posted by: Larry on May 19, 2007 01:52 AM

Once fluoride is added, it is difficult to filter out. An earlier comment says that only reverse osmosis filters - they are quite expensive - will take fluoride out of the water, so best to make sure it isn't added in the first place. If you have to, start your own campaign...

As the lightest of all the Halogens, flourine is an extremely active anion and combines to readily soak up Lithium in the body.It was added to drinking water in German Concentration Camps during WW 2.It made the prisoners docile and depressed, thus easier to manage.Especially on poor nutrition rations.
This poisoning occurred as a consequence of Hitler\'s early 1930\'s request to find a colourless/odourless drug that could be added to the water to make the German people docile and more open to suggestion.
The boffins at I G Farben came up with sodium flouride. Apparently they had stumbled on to a drug that would poison the part of the brain responsible for an individuals\' power to resist domination. This is achieved with minute repetitive doses.
Be careful repeating this in the US though, as some people like your first Sec.of Defense in 1949 fell out of a window. He was in hospital at the time.mmmmm. He was also in strong opposition to Flouridation of water supplies on military posts.
Oh BTW Prozac is a flourine based drug that fries the brain. And lets not mention the no. of flouride sensitive enzymes that are rendered useless or have limited function due to the halogen binding with the metal ions(which are required by the enzyme to function).Other enzymes are directly affected by protein poisoning.

Lets hope the truth about this hideous poison is not further repressed.

Too bad ignorance isn\'t painful
