With Easter coming up in a few days to bring us sugary eggs and sweet chocolate bunnies, perhaps this is a fitting time to talk about our collective sweet spot - sugar addiction.

Personally I am keenly aware of the dangers of sugar and the craving for sweet things associated with it - I did great damage to many of my teeth before I really knew. Yet, I have not written much about this ... but this morning, I found a letter - yes, a letter, not an email - from Austin Linkinhoker, a student who asked the question: He said
"I am focusing on how sugar affects the society; specifically, is it bad?"
Of course I had to answer, and since there is no well rounded single source I could point Austin to, I did a little search and found that when you really start looking, the situation may be much worse than many of us think it is. My conclusion in a nutshell:
SUGAR IS POISON AND SWEETNESS PROVIDES IT WITH THE HANDLE OF ADDICTION.
Two years ago, in Food Additives, Sugar and IQ I referred to a study that assessed "The Impact of a Diet Low in Food Additives and Sugar on the Academic Performance in 803 New York City Public Schools" (see a graph of changes induced by the diet here), but there is much more to sugar than school performance.
My friend Chris Gupta has several articles on his site that discuss the dangers of the sweet stuff. Sugar negatively impacts levels of vitamin C in the human body, and we all know how important vitamin C is. Cancer cells just love sugar, but don't look for government to tell you how bad sugar is - after all, there is a powerful sugar industry that lobbies those bureaucrats.
We know that sugar has few nutrients and the calories it provides can be obtained from other, less damaging foods. But it is the sweet tooth that gets us - against all better knowledge.
Anyway, just for the record and for what it might be worth in preventing some of the future damage sugar is sure to be doing yet for some time to come, here is the letter I received and my answer:

Are we responsible for all that happens in our world - illness, war, violence, but also the good things like love, progress, wise decisions and happiness? Ihaleakala Hew Len, Ph.D., says we are indeed, and we can change the less positive manifestations in our lives by working on our thoughts.

The technique to achieve this is called Ho'oponopono and it is an ancient Hawaiian code of forgiveness, used to correct the things that went wrong in a person's life. It may sound preposterous, but apparently personal responsibility is a reality and it can change things. Dr. Len says "There is no such thing as out there. Everything exists as thoughts in my mind."
Simply put, Ho'oponopono means, "to make right," or "to rectify an error." According to the ancient Hawaiians, error arises from thoughts that are tainted by painful memories from the past. Ho'oponopono offers a way to release the energy of these painful thoughts, or errors, which cause imbalance and disease. (Definition found here)
I want to thank some people who have sent this information around in emails, especially Dr. Joe "Mr. Fire" Vitale, the marketing genius who has met Dr. Len and written up his impressions on his site and blog.
Thanks also go to Gary who sent Vitale's information with the following comment:
Truth is often stranger than fiction. Anyone who is aware of recent research conclusions in frontier science (such as in entanglement physics, quantum mechanics, astronomy, astro-biology, etc) would readily agree. Actually, recent frontier science can be used to, at least, partially explain the “strange” technique of the “World’s Most Unusual Therapist.”

PS If the article seems to you to be complete fantasy without even a 5% probability of possibility, try these phrases (copy and paste each line, separately for each search, as is written below) into your Internet browser’s search engine (such as WebCrawler, Clusty, or even Google) on the World Wide Web; very interesting “stuff!” Then reread the article.
“entanglement physics”
“action at a distance” “physics”
“Time reversal symmetry”
“neuro synchrony”
"water molecules" “Emoto”
“Evoked potential”
“Biology of Belief”
“role of the observer in scientific experimentation” “physics”
But before you go searching for these terms, here the article of Dr. Joe Vitale - food for thought...

This article Be Wary of the ‘Instant Experts’ on the site of the Dr Rath Health Foundation points out that some data on the subject of Codex that are posted on websites are quite inaccurate. In addressing the misleading statements that were made by some, a good overview emerges ovn how Codex Alimentarius may come to influence consumer choice in supplements all over the world - even in the U.S.A.

The Codex Committee Meets Again in Bonn
In the past, the meetings have been rancorous and contentious, particularly between the NHF and South Africa, on the one side, and the European Commission (EC) and its European and pharmaceutical allies on the other. With the Guidelines adopted, however, the tone has changed to one where there is less drama as the battles are being fought on the fringes. In other words, the Committee is delegating the “framework filling” tasks to working groups within the Committee, which working groups report back to the Committee every year on their progress. The NHF is a member of each of these working groups.
