Health Supreme NewsGrabs - 19 September 2006

Health Supreme's News Grabs - alternative health news and other interesting bytes of information ...

In this issue:

Bristol-Myers CEO forced to quit, pharmaceutical testing indicted, Iran announces AIDS breakthrough, Cancer self-treatment, Statin side effects, Monsanto whistleblower, Senate bill 3546 supplement adverse event reporting, statin drug warning, antipsychotic medication in prisons, Paxil birth defects, GM contamination of US long grain rice, Codex Alimentarius, DDT makes a comeback, Vitamin D slashes Cancer risk, Liberty Dollar under federal attack.

A Grim Day for Big Pharma
Haven't we reached a point where the industry should no longer be considered to have a legitimate voice on policy matters -- whether reimportation of drugs from Canada, FDA regulation, trade policy related to pharmaceuticals, or otherwise?

Big Pharma's Shameful Secret
"Every year, drug companies spend $14 billion to test experimental substances on humans. Across the U.S., the centers that do the testing--and the regulators who watch them--allow scores of human test subjects to be injured or killed." A six part Special Report by Bloomberg News, Big Pharma's Shameful Secret, is a massive documented indictment of the pharmaceutical industry and its corrupt practices which would not be possible without the complicity of the stakeholders in government and academia -- both having become dependents of Big Pharma.

Iran's Health Minister to unveil breakthrough in AIDS cure
Former minister of health and medical education Mohammad Farhadi who served as executive director of the project for 'a formula for reinvigorating the immunity system of the body' told IRNA that the project led to the discovery of a formula to control symptoms of AIDS and some other virus-oriented infections.

Ideas For Cancer Self-treatment
Cal Crilly's outstanding, do it yourself, note below perfectly fits with the theme of this web site. His clear cut research and suggestions are not only good for Cancer but Heart disease, Diabetes, Aids and whole host of sickness care issues (deceptively called health care by the medical Mafia). His nutrient based suggestions are soundly based on the fact that the body needs certain building blocks to repair injuries and immune functions.

If doctors would just pay attention to what even smart lay people can figure out about how to prevent and fight disease...but it seems the influence of pharma blocks any such learning process.

Call For Senate Finance Committee Hearings On Statin Drug Side Effects

Senate Bill 3546 Heading Towards Vote - Contact Your Senators

This bill in the US Senate would require mandatory adverse event warning for supplements in the US. While seemingly a good idea, it will move supplements into the category of drugs and make it easy for the FDA to remove products from the market on a mere suspicion. Actually, concurrent consumption of pharmaceutical drugs is infinitely more likely to cause such effects.

Experts Warn Of Adverse Effects From Cholesterol Medication
Memory loss, nerve damage and muscle weakness are just some of the side effects that could be linked to statins, according to studies on cholesterol medication.

Dangerous drugs used to restrain inmates
AUSTRALIAN jails are prescribing drugs known to have dangerous side effects to manage prisoner behaviour. In one instance, a NSW prison doctor prescribed the antipsychotic medication Seroquel to a prisoner who was not psychotic. Six months later he developed diabetes - a known side-effect of the drug. Seroquel, the trade name for Quetiapine, is one of a class of "atypical antipsychotics" prescribed for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Vince Boehm comments and I agree: This happens the world over.

It is impossible to get valid numbers from prison systems to determine how many of the incarcerated have "mental" problems. When I asked a NAMI official, he told me they merely divide the number of psych drug prescriptions into the jail population to get a percentage. WOW! Are all these folks "crazy"?

Not really.

Powerful antipsychotics are used on many institutionalized people, including a very large number those without psych labels for "nontherapeutic" purposes. In my state, Delaware, this is skewed towards people of color. The US has the highest percent of it's citizens incarcerated, and Delaware came in first in the nation for this "honor".

Jails are not the only abusers of psychoactive drugs. These are used for the same wrong reasons in nursing homes and in childrens institutions.

Outrageous.

One fifth of US rice contaminated with illegal GM strain
Up to one fifth of rice entering the EU is contaminated with an illegal genetically modified (GM) strain from the US. Those are the findings of the European Commission's own investigation into EU rice imports, following the admission in August by the US government that untested strains of GM rice had entered the food chain.

Vitamin D 'slashes cancer risk'
Taking vitamin D tablets could substantially reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer, research suggests. US scientists found taking the tablets cut the risk of a disease, which has a poor prognosis in almost half of cases.

DDT Makes a Comeback
The World Health Organization today announced it will officially encourage the use of the insecticide DDT, which has been banned in many parts of the world, to help combat mosquitoes that spread malaria.

Look at this neat alternative way of getting the best of mosquitoes, found by israeli researchers.

USDA to Rubber-Stamp Contamination of Food with Illegal, Genetically Engineered Rice
The USDA has finally reacted to the contamination of the U.S. rice supply by an unapproved, genetically engineered variety of rice created by the Bayer Corporation. Three weeks ago, it was discovered that Bayer's mutant rice, gene-spliced to survive heavy doses of a powerful herbicide called glufosinate, had contaminated U.S. long grain rice stocks. The USDA admitted it had "no idea" how extensive the contamination was. Meanwhile Japan has banned all U.S. rice imports, while the EU is rejecting U.S. imports that test positive for contamination. The rice industry has been in a state of upheaval, with rumors of a massive market recall spreading across the country. This week, the USDA announced its plan of action: instead of recalling this illegal, and potentially unsafe rice, it is working with Bayer to fast-track the approval process. "Illegal, potentially hazardous rice in grain bins, on supermarket shelves, in cereal, beer, baby foods, and all rice products. It should be a no-brainer. Recall this stuff to make sure no one eats it," said Joseph Mendelson, Legal Director of the Center for Food Safety. "Instead, USDA plans to rush through 'market approval' of a genetically engineered rice that Bayer itself decided was unfit for commerce. Why? To free Bayer from liability."

Feds lower boom on alternative money
WASHINGTON — The government Thursday warned consumers and businesses that it is illegal to use alternative money known as "Liberty Dollar" coins, which organizers promote as a competitor to the almighty dollar. "We don't want consumers to be fooled," U.S. Mint spokeswoman Becky Bailey says, noting U.S. Attorneys offices across the USA have noticed a marked increase in inquiries about the coins. The coins' produers vowed to fight the government's decision.
