Biofuels Are Causing Food Crisis - NewsGrabs 6 July 2008

World Bank Secret Report Confirms: Biofuels Are Causing Food Crisis
Biofuels have forced global food prices up by 75%... The figure emphatically contradicts the US government's claims that plant-derived fuels contribute less than 3% to food-price rises. Senior development sources believe the report, completed in April, has notbeen published to avoid embarrassing President George Bush.

Prebiotic potential of almonds
Our digestive system maintains large population of bacteria that live in the colon. Prebiotics are non-digestible parts of foods that these bacteria can use to fuel their growth and activity. These ‘good’ bacteria form part of our body’s defence against harmful bacteria and play a role in the development of body's immune system. The prebiotics work by stimulating the growth of these bacteria.

The study, published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology, found that finely ground almonds significantly increased the levels of certain beneficial gut bacteria.

Video: Drugging our Children w/ Psychiatry’s Antipsychotic Drugs
Dr. Breeding, is a psychologist with a well-established private counseling practice in Austin, Texas. A significant part of his work involves counseling with parents and children. He lectures and leads workshops for parents and educators on handling the challenge of a child who is labeled a "problem." He is director of Wildest Colts Resources, a non-profit organization whose purpose is to assist adults in becoming more effective in their work with young people, offering non-drug alternatives to helping young people who are having a hard time.

Pharma Bribe Scandal In Italy Continues To Widen
Nello Martini, director of Aifa (the Italian Agency for Pharmaceuticals), has been suspended along with Caterina Gualano, head of medicines registration for the agency. The development follows a two-year investigation in which police found evidence that money had changed hands in return for the falsification of clinical data required for drug licences.

Europe Widens Pharma Antitrust Probe
The latest round of questioning broadens an inquiry begun in January, when EU investigators visited pharma offices unannounced and collected documents, the paper reminds us. At the time, Neelie Kroes, the EU’s antitrust chief, said the issue is whether brand-name drugmakers were paying generic rivals to keep their low-cost pills off the market.

In the latest questionnaires, the EU is asking about the distribution methods drugmakers use in Europe, and whether they are blocking competitors from distributing meds, according to the paper.

Lilly Loses Appeal to Limit Damages in Canadian Suit
Lilly, the world's biggest maker of psychiatric medicines, is accused of failing to warn the Zyprexa schizophrenia treatment may cause diabetes. Opting to go after a company's sales is unprecedented in court, said Toronto class-action lawyer Paul Bates, who isn't involved in the Zyprexa suit.

That has "the power to make defendants liable for truly enormous amounts of money,'' Judge Sidney Lederman wrote last July 10 in granting Lilly permission to appeal.

Vaccines And Autism: A New Piece In The Puzzle?
But the government has so far kept quiet about a second case that some say is more disturbing and more relevant to the meeting. On Jan. 11, a 6-year-old girl from Colorado received the FluMist vaccine and about a week later “became weak with multiple episodes of falling to ground” and “difficulty walking,” according to a case report filed with federal health officials and obtained by the Times.

The girl grew increasingly weak and feverish and “became more limp, appears sleepy, acts as if drunk,” the report said, according to the paper, adding that she was hospitalized and underwent surgery, and was finally withdrawn from life support. She died on April 5, according to the report, the paper writes.

21 Polish Homeless People Die after Experimental Bird flu vaccine trial
The UK Telegraph reports that three Polish doctors and six nurses are facing criminal prosecution after 21 of 350 homeless people died following clinical trials for a vaccine to the H5N1 bird-flu virus--which prosecutors say "involved an untried vaccine to the highly-contagious virus."

Male circumcision as HIV prevention found ineffective says Pasteur Institute researcher
A new paper published in the African Journal of AIDS Research by Michel Garenne, researcher at the Pasteur Institute, Paris, analyzed data from thirteen African countries and concluded that male circumcision offers little, if any, protection from HIV infection, and that voluntary circumcision programs are likely to provide little benefit, while greatly burdening the health care system.

After being treated by the AIDS lobby to urgent calls for circumcision, especially in African countries, to prevent the spread of "HIV", here a refreshing collection of the other side of the story, the one the AIDS activists never like to mention. Circumcision is ineffective.

A MYTH THAT KILLS - AIDS INDUSTRY FEEDS ON FEAR
There is no precedent in history for such myth-driven "democratization" of a disease, nor for the abominable unfairness in allocating funds away from so many curable illnesses. Says England: "We have created a monster with too many vested interests and reputations at stake."

In farming, small is truly beautiful
Small-scale, not industrial farming, is the answer to food shortages and climate change, organic farmers argued this week.

"The $1.2 billion the World Bank says will solve the food crisis in Africa is a $1.2 billion subsidy to the chemical industry," said Vandana Shiva, an Indian physics professor and environmental activist speaking at the forum in Modena.

"Countries are made dependent on chemical fertilizers when their prices have tripled in the last year due to rising oil prices," she said. "I say to governments: spend a quarter of that on organic farming and you've solved your problems."

She said industrial farming was based on planting a single crop on vast surfaces and heavy use of chemical fertilizers, a process that used 10 times more energy than it produced. "The rest turns into waste as greenhouse gases, chemical runoffs and pesticide residues in our food," she said.

In contrast, organic farms could increase output by 10 times by growing many different species of plants at the same time, which helped retain soil and water, she said. "In a one-acre farm in India they can grow 250 species of plants," she said.
