A call for new paradigm in healthcare - NewsGrabs 2 November 2008

ANH calls for new paradigm in healthcare
Ask any nutritional medicine practitioner if he or she could sustain a practice using Centrum, Sanatogen, Seven Seas or any other product in the array of supplements decorating the shelves of supermarkets and pharmacies in Europe.

I think we know the answer. The reality is that the machinations of the EU that are working to allegedly protect consumers are having an effect that runs the risk of annihilating the key tools of nutritional practitioners.

Vitamin E Prevents Lung Cancer
Researchers at the University of Texas Anderson Cancer Center have found that taking more vitamin E substantially reduces lung cancer. Their new study shows that people consuming the highest amounts of vitamin E had the greatest benefit. When they compared persons taking the most vitamin E with those taking the least, there was a 61% reduction in lung cancer risk.

The news media probably did not miss it: they simply did not report it.

Optimal dose of vitamin E maximizes benefits, minimizes risk
One of the most compelling studies of the benefits of vitamin E is the Women's Health Study, in which 40,000 healthy women, 45 and older, took 600 IU vitamin E supplements or a placebo every other day for 10 years. Women taking the supplements had 24 percent fewer deaths from heart disease. Vitamin E's protective effect appeared even stronger in women 65 and older. Those taking the vitamin experienced a 26 percent reduction in cardiovascular events and a 49 percent reduction in cardiovascular deaths.

Vitamin C Slows Down Cancer - And Can Reverse It as Well
Both the American Cancer Society and Cancer Research UK have downplayed or flatly ignored decades of physician reports and controlled clinical studies indicating that vitamin C stops cancer. What's worse, each of these supposedly comprehensive cancer research and education organizations continues to actively discourage people from using vitamin C against cancer.

"No benefit," they say. "No evidence," they say.

Both organizations are wrong. Neither statement is true.

Vitamin Use in Cancer Care
... the prejudice against supplements originated from an erroneous statement made in a 1997 New York Times article by a Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Hospital physician who contended that vitamin C interfered with chemotherapy and radiation in humans. Despite the fact that statement had no basis in scientific fact, the caution against vitamin use while undergoing chemo or radiation has been promulgated by the vast majority of the oncology community.

US National Cancer Institute's Flawed SELECT Study Attacks Vitamin E
The SELECT trial used non-natural and chemically-derived vitamin E (dl-alpha tocopherol acetate) at a dose of 400 IU per day. Any time you see an "l" after the "d" in a vitamin E product throw it in the trash where it belongs. This vitamin E molecule is synthesized from coal tar and typically made by German pharmaceutical companies like Bayer and BASF. It has little or no antioxidant activity and is useless for human health - which was obvious long before the SELECT trial was started.

This is very similar to an earlier attack on beta-carotene, implying that beta carotene caused an increase in lung cancer in smokers who took it. Once again the "study" used a chemically-derived synthetic beta carotene made from acetylene gas produced by BASF, masquerading as a dietary supplement.

IADSA Miasma - Health Food Industry Alliance wins ingredients, loses consensus
The following (mainly synthetic) additives have all been adopted as part of the official Codex General Standard for Food Additives (GSFA) at IADSA’s recommended levels of use in food supplement products: acesulfame potassium; aspartame; castor oil; cyclamates; neotame; polysorbates; polyvinyl alcohol; saccharin; and sucralose.

The result, which came at the recent Codex Alimentarius Commission in Rome, follows an active campaign by IADSA to push for the final adoption of these additives.

Codex - Global Implications for U.S. supplements industry
According to the advocacy organization Public Citizen, recent international trade agreements have caused a radical change in the impact of Codex. The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) of 1994 and other treaties have altered the nature of Codex standards by “designating Codex as the international body” establishing internationally recognized food safety standards for use in trade.

According to the New Zealand Food Safety Authority, “Codex standards are considered scientifically justified and are accepted as international yardsticks.”

Canadian to revive natural health Bill C-51
Health Minister Tony Clement plans to reintroduce controversial legislation giving the federal government more oversight regarding the quality and safety of supplements, vitamins and other natural health products.

The earlier legislation, known as bill C-51, prompted a vociferous campaign by some smaller health-products companies that said it would lead to government restrictions on the types of supplements available on the market. The bill died when the election was called.

Is the FDA legit or no? Gov’t leaves consumers confused
Most Americans don’t even know what a protection racket is, and of those who do, most don’t recognize the ones right under their noses. Intentional or not, the FDA in too many cases protects industry profits rather than consumers. In a sane world there would be murder convictions for some of the stuff that has happened along with requirements for open records viewable by all citizens. We should be able to see all scientific experiments (methods, results, and conflicts of interests). We should also be able to view all FDA meeting notes.

A guide to the Hippocratic Oath
Apollo, the god of healing, fell in love with a human, Coronis. In his absence, Apollo sent a white crow to look after her. When the crow informed Apollo that Coronis loved another man, Apollo's rage turned the crow black.

To avenge her brother, Apollo's sister shot Coronis with an arrow and, as she lay dying, Coronis told Apollo that she was bearing his child. Although Apollo could not save Coronis, he rescued the unborn child, Asclepius.

EU: Drug Safety Reports Are Kept Secret
DRUG side-effects including deaths, birth defects and disability are the fifth biggest cause of death in European hospitals, but reports on these dangers are being kept secret.

The European Commission is under pressure to change this as part of its pharma package — being finalised for release at the end of November.

The original article in the Irish Examiner brings up a "page not found" message. Has there been pressure to remove it?

A nasty bug, an effective cure
That shift in thinking reflects a growing regard for the complex and largely unknown bacterial ecosystem inside the human body.

The "microbiome," as it is known, is now the focus of a $115 million federal research project to investigate the symbiotic bond between humans and their bacteria.

If researchers can discover more about the workings of this "microbiome," they might open an entirely new frontier of medical treatments. Recent research has revealed tantalizing glimpses into the role microflora might play in everything from obesity to preventing cancer.

Public Citizen asks government to ban Avandia
The government should ban the diabetes drug Avandia because of a wide variety of life-threatening risks, including heart and liver damage, a consumer group said Thursday.

"The FDA is in possession of clear, unequivocal evidence that (Avandia) causes a wide variety of toxicities," Public Citizen said in its petition. "Many of these are life-threatening, such as heart attacks, heart failure (and) liver failure."

Texas Kids' Mental Health Research Funded By Pharma Companies
"'No pharma funding has ever been received for CMAP to the best of my knowledge,' he wrote. The Eli Lilly and Forest money 'was not for CMAP.'

Eli Lilly officials, however, confirmed that the company donated $70,000 to the state for a CMAP education program."

Mobile phones may be killing bees and causing human health problems
BEE colonies are disappearing in worrying numbers throughout the world and beekeepers in America, the UK, Scotland, Germany Switzerland, Spain, Portugal and Greece are all seeing their hives vanish. When a hive’s inhabitants suddenly disappear, leaving only queens, eggs and a few immature worker bees, it is known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD).

One of the most popular theories which have been offered to explain this disappearance is that electromagnetic radiation given off by mobile phones and other gadgets interferes with the bees’ navigation system, preventing them from finding their way back to the hive. German research has long shown that bees change their natural patterns of behaviour near power lines. So if mobile phones are causing bees to disappear, what are they doing to our health?

Video: H5N1 DNA in Flu Mist Vaccine
Flu Mist, a popular over the counter live flu vaccine, has been found to contain two H5N1 DNA markers, these markers seem to have been sewn into the flu mist vaccine to ensure that H5N1 or another strain of Avian Flu goes pandemic.

This is going to cause major problems before long, it is important that people are warned about flu mist.

Poison in South Africa
Since the observed facts contradict the estimates, the only thing demonstrated by those calculations of supposed benefits from HAART is that one can obtain any desired result from a computer model if one uses a sufficient number of suitable assumptions; and the only thing that consumers of such outputs need to remember is GIGO: Garbage In, Garbage Out [“Antiretroviral therapy has saved 3 million life-years”, 1 July 2008].

To the spurious claims of life-saving benefits from HAART, there has now been added (biology news net) an even more dubious extrapolation: Those supposed benefits have been (mis)applied to calculate how many South African lives could supposedly have been saved, if antiretroviral drugs had been distributed sooner and more widely.

Monkey business. Aids is still killing millions in Africa

The two comments by Dr Andrew Maniotis are more interesting than the article itself, which waffles on about conspiracies and the number of people who test positive but are not getting treatment. Maniotis throughly debunks the cries of "catastrophe" with a review of the actual government statistics and comments on actual clinical trials.

GM is Not the Way to Sustainability
In September 2008, the British government announced that it was going to change its policy and allow GM crops to be grown in the UK. The then science minister, Ian Pearson, explained that the world needs GM because “we can grow drought resistant crops”.

Except that we can’t make drought resistant crops by GM. Even the editor of Nature Biotechnology admits we can’t. What the minister should have said was “The biotech companies have promised us that at some unspecified time in the future they will produce drought resistant crops by some method that they haven’t yet developed, and that is why in the present we are going to allow them to grow Bt maize in the UK even though we don’t need it and the consumers have made it abundantly clear that they don’t want it.”
