Plastic in Oceans Could Form New Islands - NewsGrabs Friday, 18 December 2009

Humans drowning world's oceans in plastic
Plastic debris kills some 100,000 whales, dolphins and other marine mammals and two million birds each year, says the Ocean Conservancy. Untold numbers of sea turtles choke on floating plastic bags they mistake for jellyfish, a favorite food.

Giant 'Islands' of Garbage Floating in the Ocean, With No Fix in Sight. Yet...

Please do take a look at that article. My comment is: let's turn that plastic into something useful

What would be wrong with making the garbage that is accumulating into something useful?

Of course we should phase out throwing plastic garbage away where it gets washed into rivers and eventually ends up in the Oceans, or throwing the stuff into the water from cruise and other ships. That's just good practice, but it will need some education and some being hard with polluters. And it will need time.

But in the meantime, we have a lot of material accumulating in a few places, which it is neither economically viable nor tecnically feasible to collect and transport to land, where it can be re-cycled or buried.

So why not turn the garbage into something useful? My vision is to have some ships equipped to fish the garbage out of the sea, process it into cubes or slabs that enclose sufficient air within the plastic to float, and then just throw out those cubes or slabs right there in the area where the garbage accumulates.

Later on, when enough of those building blocks are swimming around at the center of each gyre, we should find a way to lock them together and create great swimming islands.

I could think of a number of uses for those islands that are sitting on the recycled garbage, but others might be smarter than me in that. So let's just start one thing at a time, and think about what it would take to make floating bricks out of the stuff that could later serve as building material. Then we can always take it further, finding good use for those new islands, while cutting off the supply of more garbage...

7 Foods Food Safety Experts Say They Won't Eat
Want to know the foods that the “food safety experts” won’t eat? Prevention Magazine decided to ask. They posed the question, “What foods do you avoid?” to the people whose work is to uncover what's safe to eat – or not.

I could easily add a few more things ... but let's start with these seven and start looking closer at what we eat!

Child diabetes blamed on food sweetener
(link from stephentvedten.blogspot.com - blog censored by Blogger. Check out his other site at http://www.stephentvedten.com/ )
“This is the first evidence we have that fructose increases diabetes and heart disease independently from causing simple weight gain,” said Kimber Stanhope, a molecular biologist who led the study. “We didn’t see any of these changes in the people eating glucose.”

Natural fructose represents 5%-10% of the weight of any fruit. Its use in processed foods stems from a discovery in 1971 that synthesised a 55% fructose and 45% glucose syrup from maize, creating an ingredient cheaper and six times sweeter than cane sugar.

High-fructose corn syrup, or glucose-fructose syrup, is listed as an ingredient in many food and drink products...

One thing not mentioned in the article is that vrtually all of the corn grown for industrial uses is now genetically modified. Could that have something to do with the observed damage?

A Comparison of the Effects of Three GM Corn Varieties on Mammalian Health
Conclusions:
Patho-physiological profiles are unique for each GM crop/food, underlining the necessity for a case-by-case evaluation of their safety, as is largely admitted and agreed by regulators. It is not possible to make comments concerning any general, similar subchronic toxic effect for all GM foods. However, in the three GM maize varieties that formed the basis of this investigation, new side effects linked to the consumption of these cereals were revealed, which were sex- and often dose-dependent. Effects were mostly concentrated in kidney and liver function, the two major diet detoxification organs, but in detail differed with each GM type. In addition, some effects on heart, adrenal, spleen and blood cells were also frequently noted. As there normally exists sex differences in liver and kidney metabolism, the highly statistically significant disturbances in the function of these organs, seen between male and female rats, cannot be dismissed as biologically insignificant as has been proposed by others [4]. We therefore conclude that our data strongly suggests that these GM maize varieties induce a state of hepatorenal toxicity...

Bayer Admits GMO Contamination is Out of Control
In a recently decided legal case over GE contamination of rice in the US, Bayer has admitted it has been unable to control the spread of its genetically-engineered organisms despite the use of 'best practices [to stop contamination]'. Bayer's admission shows that all outdoors field trials or commercial growing of GE crops must be stopped before our crops are irreversibly contaminated.

Unexpected incidence of cancer from higher dose synthetic folic acid
The studies found increased risk of death from cancer (as well as other risks) among those who supplemented with 800 mcg folic acid daily. Lung cancer was the type of cancer that appeared most elevated by the supplementation (around 40% of the population group were currently smokers).

It must be said though, that the results of the JAMA analysis conflict with a number of other studies that show folic acid (synthetic, oxidised folate), and more specifically, the reduced form of folates as found in green-leaved vegetables, to be linked with decreased, rather than increased, risk of particular cancers.

EU drug regulators nonchalant about conflicts of interest
The researchers, Joel Lexchin (Canada) and Orla O’Donovan (Irish), looked at the Irish Medicines Board (IMB), the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in the United Kingdom and the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) in the European Union. Disturbingly, they found that all three, whilst officially prohibiting any conflicts of interest (COI), were "presupposing and promoting" the idea that it was not possible to eliminate COI, and that there was no need to do so, because "risk of bias can be managed"!

UK: No independent national course from European Food legislation
The UK Food Standards Agency has told the Alliance for Natural Health that it will not go against the EU in drafting its ‘national legislation’ concerning food supplements and the addition of vitamins and minerals to food. The same is happening in the other 26 European Member States.

This response suggests to us that serious public, industry and practitioner concerns about the controversial EU Food Supplements Directive 2002/46/EC (FSD) are unimportant when weighed up against the Agency’s clear, but undeclared, mission to go full steam ahead in the direction decided by the undemocratic European institutions (in this case, primarily the European Commission and the European Food Safety Authority).

US: Health Care Freedom Will Be Gone Before You Know It! Listen and Act NOW
by Robert Scott Bell
When San Francisco Representative Nancy Pelosi can tell the entire country that they can be put into PRISON for not buying in to a STATE MANDATED system, one that forbids, excises and precludes any use of natural care, vitamins, nutrition, or self-directed health care – then we’ve heard the bell toll.

Listen up. Get moving. No on this damnable, execrable nonsense. We’ve got bigger issues to attend to nationally. Pretending to fix healthcare is no substitute for actually addressing pharmaceutical and medical corruption, which are rife and rampant...

US Kids Represent Psychiatric Drug Goldmine
Most all of the psychiatric drug companies have come under investigation over the past several years for promoting their drugs for off-label use, especially with children. However, the fines they end up paying are trivial compared to the profits earned through the illegal marketing campaigns.

The fraud settlements are "merely a cost of doing business to these pharmaceutical Goliaths and, in fact, caps their liability for these crimes," said Alaskan attorney Jim Gottstein, the leader of the Law Project for Psychiatric Rights (PsychRights), a public interest law firm.

"Most importantly," he noted, "these settlements have not stopped the practice of psychiatrists and other prescribers giving these drugs to children and youth and Medicaid continuing to pay for these fraudulent claims."

Pharmaceutical company pay-offs keep generic drugs out of the market
The vehicle for these deals is patent litigation. When a generic drug is approved to come to market, the maker of the more expensive name-brand drug sues the generic for patent infringement. But instead of a conventional settlement, in which the generic pays the patent-holder to settle the claim that it infringed the patent, the payment goes the other way: the patent-holder pays the maker of the generic, in exchange for a pledge to delay bringing the generic to market.

Needless Cancer Deaths - Life Extension Magazine
For years, I read that large pharmaceutical companies buy up effective cancer drugs and intentionally suppress them in order to protect their highly profitable patented drugs. I never quite believed it until I heard it directly from a mainstream researcher...

Wikileaks Publishes Confidential Reports - Pharma Inside The WHO
The compilation of documents shows the influence of "Big Pharma" on the policy making decisions of the WHO, the UN body safeguarding public health. These confidential documents were obtained by the drug industry before their public release to WHO member states (scheduled to be released May 2010). The document also illustrates that the WHO expert group was highly responsive to industry lobbying...

India: Health Experts File Irrational Vaccines Petition In Delhi High Court
The court was hearing a petition that alleged that vaccines are being introduced in the public health system by the government under the influence of vaccine manufacturers and international agencies like the World Health Organization (WHO), without proper epidemiological and medical studies.

WHO: 'DR. FLU' UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR GROSS CONFLICT OF INTEREST
The man with the nickname “Dr Flu”, Professor Albert Osterhaus, of the Erasmus University in Rotterdam Holland has been named by Dutch media researchers as the person at the center of the worldwide Swine Flu H1N1 Influenza A 2009 pandemic hysteria. Not only is Osterhaus the connecting person in an international network that has been described as the Pharma Mafia, he is THE key advisor to WHO on influenza and is intimately positioned to personally profit from the billions of euros in vaccines allegedly aimed at H1N1.

UK: Gardasil Vaccine Linked To Multiple Sclerosis
THE cervical cancer vaccine Gardasil has triggered multiple sclerosis (MS) symptoms in some girls after being inoculated.

Doctors said the victims were either teenagers or women in their early 20s who may have been predisposed to MS or who had a prior history of symptoms.

St Vincent's Hospital neurologist Dr Ian Sutton reported five cases in a journal article in January. Another five have since emerged.

Copenhagen Climate Talks - The Movement of Movements
Rather than treating climate change as a purely environmental issue that can be averted by technological solutions and market mechanisms, climate justice suggests that the causes lie in the unjust economic model that has seen industrialised countries reap the benefits of fossil fuel-intensive development. The movement calls for the industrialised world to repay its climate debt to poor countries, communities and people – those who will be most impacted by a crisis not of their making.

Instead of focussing on the buying and selling of the right to pollute, advocates argue for solutions that promote alternative paths to development, such as sharing green technology, encouraging sustainable agricultural practices, and ensuring all communities have access to a fair and equitable share of the world’s resources.
