Bolivia Challenges Patentability of Life Forms
Bolivia has challenged, during the World Trade Organization (WTO) negotiations of the Council for Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), the prevailing philosophy of the patentability of life forms.

The patenting of life forms has brought serious problems, especially for farmers (see the case of Monsanto against Schmeiser for violation of its patent on genetically modified canola seeds) and for the biological resources of whole countries who find that all of a sudden, their herbs and traditionally used seeds varieties may have been patented by a multinational corporation to exclusively exploit, leaving the country or culture of origin high and dry.
Oh and... by the way, google refuses to serve up that article about Schmeiser's battle with the giant. That's why I am taking care to link it from time to time. And that's also why I have passed to using Microsoft's Bing as a search engine. Wonder how much Monsanto paid google to de-emphasize critical articles in search results...
GM Cotton: Monsanto admits their technology doesn't work!
Monsanto has decided to tell the truth about something: its technology doesn't work!, reports The Hindu. I'm going to need a second cup of chai to digest this, Monsanto speaking honest!? Indian farmers and scientist have been seeing this in their Bt cotton fields for a few years: pests become resistant to Monsanto's genetically engineered toxins and thus farmers apply huge amounts of pesticides. Monsanto has always denied this, has the recent massive rejection of its Bt brinjal in India woken up its senses?For years Monsanto has been shouting that the main - read only - benefit of Bt cotton in India (the only genetically engineered crop planted here) was the reduction in pesticide use. Well, it seems they have just admitted this is not true. Pink bollworm, a serious pest for cotton farmers in India, is now resistant to the toxin in Bt cotton. Meaning that this bug is now sort of a super-pest that farmers will have to work harder and harder to avoid.
What is Monsanto's solution to this? Maybe you have guessed it: use Monsanto's next weapon – same technology - Bt cotton 2.0. With double the amount of toxins (and almost double the price of non-Bt seeds).
High Fructose Corn Syrup Linked to Liver Scarring
"We found that increased consumption of high fructose corn syrup was associated with scarring in the liver, or fibrosis, among patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)," said Manal Abdelmalek, MD, MPH, associate professor of medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology/Hepatology at Duke University Medical Center."Our findings suggest that we may need to go back to healthier diets that are more holistic," Abdelmalek said. "High fructose corn syrup, which is predominately in soft-drinks and processed foods, may not be as benign as we previously thought."
The consumption of fructose has increased exponentially since the early 1970s, and with this rise, an increase in obesity and complications of obesity have been observed, Abdelmalek said.
"There is an increasing amount of data that suggests high fructose corn syrup is fueling the fire of the obesity epidemic, but until now no one has ever suggested that it contributes to liver disease and/or liver injury."
Check those food and drink labels for HFCS or high fructose corn syrup...
Eli Lilly, desperate to sell bovine growth hormone, makes up scientific endorsements
At a Montreal animal science meeting in July 2009, Eli Lilly's Elanco division sponsored a press release masquerading as a scientific paper that concluded — surprise, surprise — that bovine growth hormone is perfectly safe for cows and humans. FDA Warns About Zocor And Muscle Damage
The agency says there's a potential for increased risk of muscle injury from the 80 mg dose of Zocor, or simvastatin, as the generic is known. In issuing its warning, the FDA notes muscle injury, or myopathy, is a known side effect with all statins, but this new concern highlights "the greater risk of developing muscle injury, including rhabdomyolysis" while on the highest dose.
