World Health Organization Experts' conflicting interests - Health Supreme NewsGrabs Saturday, 5 June 2010

WHO swine flu experts 'linked' with drug companies
Key scientists behind World Health Organization advice on stockpiling of pandemic flu drugs had financial ties with companies which stood to profit, an investigation has found.

In addition, membership of the "emergency committee" which advised WHO's director general Margaret Chan on declaring an influenza pandemic has been kept secret.

It means the names of the 16 committee members are known only to people within WHO, and as such their possible conflicts of interest with drug companies are unknown.

There should be no such thing as a "secret committee" at WHO. At the end of the day, those are the decision makers, and I believe we have a right to know who they are and who is paying them...

Keiji Fukuda, Assistant Director General for Health Security and Environment of the World Health Organization (WHO), and Special Advisor on Pandemic Influenza of WHO, speaks during a briefing on the general H1N1 pandemic situation at the European headquarters of the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, Monday, March 29, 2010. WHO Criticized For Pandemic Conflicts Of Interest
The World Health Organization denied that the pharmaceutical industry influenced its planning for a flu pandemic, but new documents suggest that several key scientists who advised the agency had done paid work for the drugmakers - Roche and GlaxoSmithKline - that stood to profit from their guidance, BMJ reports. And while the WHO’s decisions led numerous governments to stockpile billions of dollars of antivirals, the agency failed to provide any details about conflict of interests involving the experts who were consulted and if any action was taken “despite repeated requests.”

Swine flu: BMJ investigation confirms WHO experts in pay of 'pharma'
Two new 'damning' reports about the Swine flu pandemic were published today: The first—the result of an investigation by the British Medical Journal (BMJ) and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism—reveals the ties to 'pharma' of the three scientists who authored the World Health Organization (WHO) guidance issued in 2004. It raises both moral and ethical questions, when scientists working on guidance documents to inform government practice, are allowed to remain in the pay of pharmaceutical companies. It is after all the pharmaceutical companies who stand to gain, to the tune of billions of dollars, from a pandemic. Still worse, is that this conflict of interest was not declared by the WHO.

In a second report, published today by the Council of Europe, the Swine Flu pandemic is denounced as an unjustified waste of public money, and we are informed about the unacceptable lack of transparency surrounding pandemic decision making. Paul Flynn MP, who is a member of the Council of Europe Health Committee, and who prepared the report, has commented: " The tentacles of drug company influence are in all levels in the decision-making process… It must be right that the WHO is transparent because there has been distortion of priorities of public health all over Europe, waste of huge sums of public money and provocation of unjustified fear."

Lack of Omega-6 Fatty Acid Linked to Severe Dermatitis
“In experiments with mice, we knocked out a gene responsible for an enzyme that helps the body to make arachidonic acid. Without arachidonic acid, the mice developed severe ulcerative dermatitis. The animals were very itchy, they scratched themselves continuously, and they developed a lot of bleeding sores,” said Manabu Nakamura, a U of I associate professor of food science and human nutrition. When arachidonic acid was added to the animals’ diet, the itching went away, he said.

UK: Government initiated GM Dialogue is 'Naked PR for Industry'
Dr. Helen Wallace, director of GeneWatch UK resigned from UK Food Standards Agency’s Steering Group for GM Dialogue in a strongly worded open letter to the chair, exposing and condemning it as a naked “PR exercise on behalf of the GM industry” at taxpayers’ expense, £500 000 to be precise.

A Hidden Danger of “an Aspirin a Day”
If your physician has suggested you take aspirin to reduce your risk of heart disease, it is important to remember that even small doses of daily aspirin — including “baby aspirin,” at a dose of 81 milligrams daily — can increase your risk of ulcers and bleeding. It is important to remember that all Nsaids, including over the counter aspirin, have the potential to damage the tissue of the gastrointestinal tract. Damage can occur anywhere, from mouth to anus.

Over-the-counter doses of aspirin, or buffered or enteric coated aspirin preparations, do not eliminate the risk of developing an Nsaid-related ulcer. Your risk for bleeding is still two- to four-fold greater than if you were not taking the aspirin product at all.

Tracking the American Epidemic of Mental Illness - Part I
Tracking the American Epidemic of Mental Illness - Part II
Tax dollars are being used to fuel the American epidemic of mental illness by promoting the preemptive drugging of persons supposedly at risk of developing mental disorders, to the great benefit of the pharmaceutical industry.

A fortune can be made from these life-long antipsychotic customers. In April 2010, the price for one box of Invega, at a middle dose, was $1,373 at Risperdal went for $788 per 90 pills. The cost was $1,395 for 100 tablets of Abilify. Seroquel cost $997 per 100. One-hundred capsules of Geodon sold for $918 and Zyprexa cost $1,523 for a hundred 10mg pills.

Antidepressants in pregnancy increase risk of miscarriage
A new study in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal) found a 68% increase in the overall risk of miscarriage in pregnant women using antidepressants.

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), especially paroxetine and also venlafaxine were associated with increased risk of miscarriage as were higher daily doses of either antidepressant. As well, a combination of different antidepressants doubled the risk of miscarriages.

The crime of mental illness
Canada needs to change its approach to mentally ill prisoners as correctional facilities worldwide contain a higher percentage of people with mental illness than the general population, states an editorial in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal).

The higher percentage of inmates with mental health issues may be due to the fact people with significant mental health issues such as schizophrenia or personality disorders can act in socially inappropriate ways that can be misinterpreted or clash with the law. Prevention programs in the community are also needed to help address problems well before people might get in trouble with the law.

"Having people with treatable mental health disorders fall into the criminal justice system serves neither society nor the individual," write Dr. Paul Hebert, Editor-in-Chief and Dr. Noni MacDonald, Deputy Editor, CMAJ with Dr. Stephen Hucker, Forensic Psychiatrist, University of Toronto. "That so many inmates in jails and prisons have mental health disorders — often untreated — is an indictment of society's values and understanding of mental health disorders."

Medicating Children: A “Whistleblower’s” Lawsuit Raises a Novel Legal Question
In the past few years, a number of pharmaceutical companies have admitted to federal charges that they illegally marketed psychiatric medications for non-approved uses, with the companies paying large sums to settle the cases. Now, a legal complaint filed by the Law Project for Psychiatric Rights in an Alaskan federal court is raising a related question. When healthcare providers bill Medicaid for prescriptions of psychiatric drugs to children for non-approved uses, are they committing Medicaid fraud?

Pfizer Trovan Trial in Nigeria subject to US lawsuit
Should Nigerian Lawsuit Against Pfizer Proceed?
In a closely watched matter, the US Solicitor General has filed a brief suggesting to the US Supreme Court that a lawsuit filed against Pfizer by several Nigerians over the 1996 Trovan scandal should proceed. Essentially, this means the Solicitor General disagrees with Pfizer’s interpretation of a law that has been relied upon to claim US companies committed eggregious behavior overseas, and that the Supreme Court should not bother to hear the case.

Will Merck's Gardasil HPV Vaccine be its Next Vioxx?
Besides the 66 deaths, Gardasil's serious side effects now include Guillain-Barre syndrome, lupus, seizures, anaphylactic shock, chronic fatigue, paralysis, blood clots, brain inflammation, blurred vision and blindness, convulsions, demyelinating encephalomyelitis, multiple sclerosis, pancreatitis and various digestive disorders. Last autumn a case of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as Lou Gehrig's disease, was reported. And a recent 2010 issue of the Journal of Child Neurology investigated the case of a 16-year old girl going blind following vaccination, a secondary symptom to multiple sclerosis.

We are now faced with a paradoxical issue. Do we continue to create ever more vaccines, always with the assumption that their safety and efficacy have been proven and that there is no limit to how many of these vaccines can be introduced into a human body. Or do we for the first time investigate objectively by a high scientific gold standard, independent from the vaccine manufacturers and the federal agencies, the long term safety and efficacy of individual vaccines and and vaccines used in combination?

Autism-MMR doctor is not giving up
Wakefield, however, appears unrepentant. As New Scientist went to press, he was due to address a rally in Chicago on 26 May organised by a group called the Center for Personal Rights, which promotes "individual vaccination choice, parental consent to vaccination for children, and freedom to make healthcare decisions for ourselves and our families".

He is also due to publish a book arguing his position on autism and vaccines, and has said he will appeal against the GMC ruling.

How AIDS Didn't Become a Kissing Disease
"Twenty-five years of AIDS research have demonstrated the following: Gallo's "HTLV-III" has no particular, reproducible size or gene sequence; the proteins that are supposed to belong to it and it alone are found in almost every human disease and condition. The "LAV/HTLV-III/HIV" proteins and gene sequences have to be cobbled together through 'consensus agreement' among different labs because while fishing in beaten-up cell cultures, researchers always find different things to call "HIV."

Finally, "HIV" in any or all of its forms, has never been shown to even remotely affect T-Cells, which is the only meaningful prediction of AIDS theory. But none of this has mattered to AIDS researchers, because AIDS theory is about fear, politics and social control, and has never been about science."

AIDS/CFS: Regimen for Natural Therapy - Part III Maintenance
Once you have successfully eliminated the disease agents in your body and your health is restored, you will need to keep up a strong immune system maintenance regimen to prevent re-occurrence. The following nutrients will help you to do this.

Mobile phones responsible for disappearance of honey bee
Now researchers from Chandigarh's Punjab University claim they have found the cause which could be the first step in reversing the decline: They have established that radiation from mobile telephones is a key factor in the phenomenon and say that it probably interfering with the bee's navigation senses.

They set up a controlled experiment in Punjab earlier this year comparing the behaviour and productivity of bees in two hives – one fitted with two mobile telephones which were powered on for two fifteen minute sessions per day for three months. The other had dummy models installed.

After three months the researchers recorded a dramatic decline in the size of the hive fitted with the mobile phon, a significant reduction in the number of eggs laid by the queen bee. The bees also stopped producing honey.

The queen bee in the "mobile" hive produced fewer than half of those created by her counterpart in the normal hive.

They also found a dramatic decline in the number of worker bees returning to the hive after collecting pollen. Because of this the amount of nectar produced in the hive also shrank.

It only took about three years of harping on this for a study finally to appear. It will take another year or two for the message to virally spread and then - good bye mobile phones unless ... they can figure out a way to make the waves biocompatible. Digitally randomizing the packet frequency would go a long way to eliminate ELF modulation of the microwave carrier wave for mobile voice and data. As far as biological tissues and living organisms are concerned, the microwaves would then 'fade into the background'.
