US Healthcare System 'Can be Saved' - Health Supreme NewsGrabs 23 November 2010

German Doctor writes to Obama: US Healthcare System Can be Saved
The current health care system, and the US is not an exception here, is chasing the wrong incentives.

johann_schnitzer.gif

Dr Johann Georg Schnitzer, a German doctor who is into natural health options rather than just the treatment of disease, has expressed what many advocates of good nutrition and prevention know all too well.

Having profit as a goal is quite natural as it is a widespread economic "reality", but in the case of healthcare, if profit means more sick people bring more profit, that economic constraint pushes us in the wrong direction. The result is that healthcare world wide has become just too expensive to pay for, even for the economies of economic powerhouses like the US and other "developed" countries.

Instead of going to the root of the problem, we try to ration health care, we try to force pharmaceutical companies to lower the prices of their products, we try to force everyone to pay into an "insurance" fund so as to make the exaggerated costs halfway bearable. But our patchwork efforts are not going to solve the problem of deteriorating health and rising costs. The economic interests that need our illnesses for their survival are just too powerful.

Schnitzer says: Diseases of civilization in a population do not increase in linear progression, they grow in relatively sudden jumps and here are the reasons:

Alternative Medicine meets European Parliament
The first comprehensive group of European complementary and alternative medicine interests – the European Parliament Interest Group on Complementary and Alternative Medicine (EPIGCAM) – presented its concerns yesterday in the European Parliament to Members of the European Parliament and the European Commission.

Members of the Interest Group expressed grave concerns in several areas, and particularly over the future of herbal medicine in the context of a flawed European directive known as the Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive.

A year's worth of Vitamin C studies - Part IV
Well, that's vitamin C and cancer over the past 12 months. As I mentioned earlier, is there some code in this language where things don't mean what they say that I never learned in med school for why this is not being more actively pursued and employed. Sure, vitamin C is terribly expensive, makes your hair fallout, your stomach lining slough off and you risk a painful death from febrile neutropenia, oh wait, I mean that's what we use now [for chemotherapy]. Vitamin C is dirt cheap and the only chemotherapeutic where you could chug a 1/4 lb of it and be none the worse for wear in 24 hours. Really, what am I missing?

High alpha-carotene levels associated with longer life
Oxygen-related damage to DNA, proteins and fats may play a role in the development of chronic diseases like heart disease and cancer, according to background information in the article. Carotenoids—including beta-carotene, alpha-carotene and lycopene—are produced by plants and microorganisms and act as antioxidants, counteracting this damage. Carotenoids in the human body are obtained mainly through eating fruits and vegetables rich in the nutrients, or through antioxidant supplements.

Although studies suggest eating more fruits and vegetables is associated with lower risk of chronic diseases, randomized controlled trials have not shown any benefit for beta-carotene supplements, the authors note. "Therefore, carotenoids other than beta-carotene may contribute to the reduction in disease risk, and their effects on risk of disease merit investigation," the authors write.

Doctor's Data v. Barrett, et al - a Summary to Date...
The Doctor's Data v Stephen Barrett Federal Court is, by far, the most important court case involving health care in North America, for, for the first major time the group that conspires to damage emerging health care systems in favor of the status quo is, itself, under major attack, and will likely be destroyed by this action. And, it is about time.

US “Food Safety” Bill - The Beast Survives But Less Unpleasant
Among other changes, the final Manager's Amendment included the exemption for dietary supplements from Codex food guidelines, exemption language for dietary supplement manufacturers and retailers from the conventional food company and distributor registration fees, reporting and product traceability requirements. The final Manager's Amendment also included the Testor-Hagan amendment exempting small farmers and retailers; organic farmers were already exempted from FDA registration fee, reporting, and product traceability requirements, for farms with less than $500,000 in gross receipts.

The beast will most likely be restrained, but the fight against it will still go on. S.510 authorizes, but does not appropriate, monies for the FDA-expanded regulation of domestic and imported conventional food producers, distributors, and retailers, and the hiring of more FDA bureaucrats.

Seeds, Plants, property, and the promise of open source biology
The same multinational corporations that are putting their proprietary, genetically modified plants into the envorinment and onto our tables are also well on the way to establishing a monopoly on seeds. They have purchased the majority of commercial seed companies and the choices for farmers to use non-GM seeds are getting fewer and fewer.

So here is a counter-proposal. Following the example of what was done for free and open source software with a "General Public License" (GPL), Jack Kloppenburg is proposing to establish a GPLPG (General Public License for Plant Germplasm) license for seeds and plant varieties that allows free use of the plants by farmers and growers, but prevents any so licensed seeds or plants from being subsequently altered and made commercial.

The license imposes on subsequent users of the Plant Germplasm (the seeds or plants) that any new varieties developed on the basis of those plants be similarly licensed for free use.

With Naturally Occuring Standards for Vitamins Less is More
When an ingredient of say, Vitamin C is NOS it means that the Vitamin C nutrient potency contained in the supplement is completely natural, whole, complex and it is therefore naturally potent. For example, Vitamin C from ascorbic acid is not a whole vitamin C. Ascorbic acid is only a part of any whole vitamin C nutrient complex which also should include bioflavonoids, tannins, and maybe ellagic acid along with other "parts" of the whole vitamin C in order to be called a natural or whole nutient. There are also many other parts of the whole vitamin C that are yet to be discovered, but are provided by nature to allow the whole vitamin C to work effectively.

Although, in a general way, it may be true that vitamin C works better when all of its naturally occurring co-factors are present, there is no doubt that isolated ascorbic acid also works. As these people say, there are "many other parts of the whole vitamin C that are yet to be discovered". What this means is that we really aren't ready for a "standard" just yet. Where is the cut-off point. What would have to be part of the vitamin C complex.

Of course nutrients in our foods work in synergy with each other and with some nutritional co-factors that have not yet been identified, let alone well researched. And very probably, a vitamin C that has all those important co-factors works better for some uses than pure and naked ascorbic acid. So it is good to get research going in the direction of identifying what whole food factors are, and what, if any, benefits they have over the isolated nutrient.

But let's not condemn just yet what we have (the isolated vitamins) just because tomorrow we might have proof that combined with some other factors they actually work better. Let's see the research on this first.

Ablechild - Unsung Hero in Battle Against Psychopharmaceutical Industry
The founders of Ablechild, Patricia Weathers and Sheila Matthews, have earned the title of “Unsung Heroes,” as both pioneers and warriors for over a decade, in the battle to protect children from the Psychop harmaceutical Industry .

Now with thousands of members, Ablechild acts as an independent advocate on behalf of parents whose children have been subjected to mental health screening and psychiatric labeling and drugging, and as a proponent for children in foster care who are improperly treated with psychotropic drugs, many times off-label, without informed consent.

15 Dangerous Drugs Big Pharma Shoves Down Our Throats
In the pharmaceutical industry’s rush to get drugs to market, safety usually comes last. Long studies to truly assess a drug's risks just delay profits after all -- and if problems do emerge after medication hits the market, settlements are usually less than profits. Remember, Vioxx still made money.

The following drugs are so plagued with safety problems...

Medical Mainstream Denies HAART Kidney Toxicity
Mainstreamers have perfected the ART of explaining away the toxicities of HAART even as they publish illustrations of its statistically significant toxicities. They find that HAART causes oxidative stress even “during apparently successful HAART”, which “underline[s] HAART associated toxicity”; yet they practice HAART denialism by calling it “life-saving”.

They know that protease inhibitors cause lipodystrophy, but practice denialism by calling it “HIV-associated” lipodystrophy.

They know that HAART causes kidney disease, but practice denialism by calling it “HIV-associated nephropathy”...

The Problem With Vaccines – Synergistic Effect of Heavy Metal Toxicity
Most practicing MD’s recognize Mercury & Aluminum to be severe neuro-toxins. Still, pediatricians & family doctors routinely recommend their patients (including babies, young children, pregnant women & the elderly) receive the full/partial schedule of standard immunization shots available.

In a closed door meeting conducted by the CDC in 2000, doctors alluded to their concerns over heavy metal toxicity in vaccines; while acknowledging a glaring void in scientific research on this neglected aspect of synergy,

“Aluminum & mercury are often simultaneously administered to infants, both at the same site & at different sites. However, there is absolutely no data, including animal data, about the potential for SYNERGY, additively or antagonism, all of which can occur in binary metal mixtures that relate and allow us to draw any conclusions from the simultaneous exposure to these two salts in vaccines.” Dr. Johnston

FDA Says You Don’t Exist -You Have Until Dec. 3 to Prove Them Wrong...
Here is one of the frauds for which FDA is famous. FDA’s in-house dentist Susan Runner, who proudly unveiled FDA’s abysmal amalgam rule at a news conference in July 2009, said that in all of human history only 141 people have complained about amalgam. In reality, FDA has received thousands of letters and comments from people saying amalgam’s mercury has caused grievous harm to them or a member of their family. But FDA’s “scientists” (and I use that word loosely) have decided that their prime source of information is the pro-mercury American Dental Association – a trade association that endorses the products of amalgam manufacturers for cash and that owns two amalgam patents.
