Big Pharma set to take over medical marijuana market

Just as the federal government is clamping down on medical marijuana dispensaries, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) may be set to give Big Pharma the clearance to take over the market."GW Pharmaceuticals plc announces the initiation of the Phase III clinical trials programme of Sativex in the treatment of pain in patients with advanced cancer, who experience inadequate analgesia during optimized chronic opioid therapy," GW said in a statement. "This indication represents the initial target indication for Sativex in the United States."
Sativex is the brand name for a drug derived from cannabis sativa. It's an extract from the whole plant cannabis, not a synthetic compound. Even GW defines the drug as marijuana.
Yet as the FDA is poised to approve the drug for Big Pharma, state-licensed medical marijuana dispensaries that provide relief for thousands of Americans are under attack by other federal agencies...
The trouble with pharma's extracts is that - more often than not - they are missing some important synergy that's present in the original plant material, as they standardize for only one or a few of what they call the "active ingredients".So for instance they can turn a marijuana extract into a fairly effective pain medicine by emphasizing certain cannabinoids and discarding other substances, and in the process they lose the anti-cancer and other major healing properties of the plant.
It's a very clever but covert way of getting rid of any competition from natural substances. Take it over to sell yourself, but ruin its most important effects in the process.
New York Times: Is Sugar Toxic?On May 26, 2009, Robert Lustig gave a lecture called “Sugar: The Bitter Truth,” which was posted on YouTube the following July. Since then, it has been viewed well over 800,000 times, gaining new viewers at a rate of about 50,000 per month, fairly remarkable numbers for a 90-minute discussion of the nuances of fructose biochemistry and human physiology.
The viral success of his lecture, though, has little to do with Lustig’s impressive credentials and far more with the persuasive case he makes that sugar is a “toxin” or a “poison,” terms he uses together 13 times through the course of the lecture, in addition to the five references to sugar as merely “evil.” And by “sugar,” Lustig means not only the white granulated stuff that we put in coffee and sprinkle on cereal — technically known as sucrose — but also high-fructose corn syrup, which has already become without Lustig’s help what he calls “the most demonized additive known to man.”

A change in political allegiances excluded the Greens from Ireland's governing coalition and so the country's stance of GMO was reversed again.
Update: "It has come to our attention that the collapse of Ireland's coalition with the Green Party has given Fianna Fáil the freedom to ditch Ireland's anti-GM stance. Brendan Smith from the ruling Fianna Fáil party, confirmed in a statement on April 19th, 2011 that Ireland has changed its voting position and will now support a number of EU Commission proposals designed to allow the marketing of GM food for human consumption, animal feed and food ingredients. Thus, most of the information from the article is now outdated."

The extent and range of relationships between tax-exempt foundations and for-profit corporations suggest that transparency or grant-making recusal of employees alone may not be preventing potential conflicts of interests between global health programs and their financing.
Bill Gates funds covert vaccine nanotechnologyThe Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is gaining a reputation for funding technologies designed to roll out mass sterilization and vaccination programs around the world.
