The Theft of our Health Rights - Health Supreme NewsGrabs 24 July 2011
Can The Theft of Health Rights Be Stopped?A stunning theft of our rights is happening now—right under our collective noses. We're losing the right to manage our personal health as we see fit. It's a right so basic that no one ever thought to list it among the rights of free speech and assembly. Who could ever have imagined that something so basic might come into question?
That, though, is exactly what is happening. Some of us try to do battle, but we've been focusing on losses as they occur. We combat genetically modified foods, loss of access to vitamins and herbs, and much more. The war is being fought on so many different fronts that we're all suffering battle fatigue. We win an occasional bout, but lose most, which adds to our frustration.
Thanks to Heidi Stevenson - there are two petitions to sign (linked in the article), one for Europeans and one for Americans. The situation is pretty bad. My (somewhat radical) comment and proposal:
"It is time to turn matters around. Pharmaceutical medicines are highly unsafe despite all the laws that require registration and controls. Obviously those laws have never worked as intended. We should therefore consider to liberalize any health product, including medicines, and let the market decide. Courts can enforce liability for damage done. I predict this will work better than registration of medicine and the medical monopoly that has been built upon that requirement."
USA: New Strategy in Nutrition Wars - Let's drag the debate out into the openThese companies are apparently convinced everything is all right and their trade organizations and lobbyists are doing a swell job representing them in Washington...
USA: Write the FDA Now - Here's Why & HowEveryone with even an ounce of common sense has grave concerns about the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s recently released Draft Guidance for Industry: Dietary Supplements: New Dietary Ingredient Notifications and Related Issues. This Agency sprang this trap on both industry and consumers without seeking any prior input from us at all. It had almost 17 years to seek our opinion before coming out with this document, and now they are giving us a miserly 90 days to respond with our comments. Why is this issue so important?
USA: New York Times Launches Attack on Supplement-Protecting SenatorThe New York Times recently ran a piece about Sen. Orrin Hatch’s support for the supplement industry. The article was full of innuendo about Sen. Hatch being in bed with supplement companies, in effect helping them make exaggerated claims to push their products. ANH got a similar treatment. The paper calls us “a trade group” (that is, a front for supplement companies) that helped defeat the McCain bill.
College of Medicine symposium foresees herbal medicine on UK National Health ServiceThe College of Medicine rose from the ashes of the Prince of Wales' charity, the Foundation for Integrated Health. Despite avoiding the term 'integration', its mission appears to include integrating natural healthcare modalities with orthodox approaches: "We have an open mind on the best, most clinically and cost effective solutions. Where there is a good evidence base, that means we are prepared to consider complementary as well as orthodox interventions, especially in the treatment of long-term conditions for which science has yet to provide a cure."

DNA Sequence Reconstituted from Water Memory? When Noble laureate HIV researcher Luc Montagnier discovered that certain bacterial and viral DNA sequences dissolved in water causes electromagnetic signals to be emitted at high dilutions, that was bad enough. Now, new results from his lab appear to show that the DNA sequence itself could be reconstituted from the electromagnetic signal. That has so stunned the scientific community that one prominent supporter was nonetheless moved to remark: “Luc is either a genius or he is mad!” But some quantum physicists are taking that very seriously, and are linking Montagnier’s findings to decades of research demonstrating the sensitivity of organisms to extremely weak electromagnetic fields.
CODEX Sends Melamine Back To The Drawing BoardAs Scott Tips, the NHF’s president and delegate at these meetings, said to the Commission:
“The CCCF Chairman defended the proposed standard along with the huge exemption that made a mockery of the lowered limit on contamination, stating in part that there was no danger of melamine migration from packaging and that in any case it was unavoidable. When my turn to speak arrived, I responded that if there were no danger from such migration, then why was it not subject to the limit as well? And I argued further that it was avoidable by changing manufacturing processes to eliminate melamine spraying onto the packaging material used. No one can be, or is, sure of the true danger posed by melamine migration into these formulas being consumed by infants with immature detoxification systems.”
The Chairmen and Chairwomen of the Codex Committees and the Commission itself wield considerable power, especially where the issue is close. This issue was close; and, to her immense credit, Commission Chairwoman Karen Hulebak made the brave and correct decision to send this standard back to the Committee for further discussion and debate. Equally impressive was her subsequent defense of this decision against Australia, Canada, and Fiji’s concerted attempts to get her to change her mind. To Canada’s tedious arguments that it had conducted risk assessments showing no risk, the Chairwoman firmly replied, “Share it widely with CCCF next year.” And that was that.
The GMO labeling fight at the Codex Alimentarius Commission: How big a victory for consumers?A standing item of contention on the Codex Committee on Food Labeling (CCFL) for two decades has been whether or not to recommend to the commission the adoption of a labeling standard for foods with genetically modified ingredients. The United States and several other exporting countries of genetically modified organisms (or “foods derived from modern biotechnology” in the Codex terminology) had opposed any labeling of GMOs as “misleading even if true.” The justification for opposition was that even though governmental adoption of any Codex standard is voluntary, the adoption of a GM labeling standard would become an unfair trade barrier. However, at a June 16 meeting, the U.S. Codex Office announced that it would not oppose the adoption of a Codex guidance on the voluntary labeling of GMOs.
UK: Government Scientific Adviser Promotes GMOProfessor John Beddington, the UK government’s Chief Scientific Advisor, has on the one hand played down the potential future role of genetically modified (GM) crops in the country’s food policy – but thinks it is safe for human health and should be used “more generally”. Is this an attempt to appeal to both sides of the debate, while actually doing nothing to slow down the UK's long-standing desire to push GM for all its worth in both the developed and developing worlds?
Investing For A Backlash Against PsychopharmacologyAmong the public, scholars and within the medical profession, a backlash has developed against the widespread use of psychoactive drugs. This backlash will help define the biotech and pharmaceutical industries in the coming years, because it means over time a shift in opportunities and capital away from a search for the next psychiatric blockbuster toward solutions to more tractable human troubles that arise outside of the central nervous system.

USA: National Council on Disability urges elimination of electroshock in school for disabledThe issue was sparked by ongoing controversies at the Judge Rotenberg Center (JRC) in Canton, Massachusetts -- the only known school in the nation currently using electric shock and other aversive punishments not inflicted on any of the 2.2 million inmates now held in U.S. jails and prisons. Over its 40-year history, six children have died while in the care of JRC, prompting numerous lawsuits and investigations.
Murdoch and Vaccines: Exposure of Murdoch’s Crimes Expose a Much Larger StoryBrian Deer is the reporter who savaged Dr Wakefield from the pages of the Sunday Times, a paper managed by Rupert Murdoch’s son James Murdoch who is on the board of GlaxoSmithKline which makes the MMR. Deer researched his case with the help of Medico-Legal Investigations, a private enquiry company whose only source of funding is the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry. Deer was both the journalist writing on Wakefield and the person to bring a case of fitness to practice medicine to the General Medical Council, and then wrote about the proceedings as well.

A simple, inexpensive, non-toxic cure for AIDS that has no negative side-effects has been described by Pacini and Ruggiero at the 6th International AIDS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention (Rome, 17-20 July 2011).
The basic mechanism involves stimulation of the immune system which increases CD4 counts and corrects CD4/CD8 balance, in “HIV-positive” people and also in HIV-negative people.
Economy: How to Liberate America from Wall Street RuleThe report calls for building a money/banking/finance system of local financial institutions that are transparent, accountable, rooted in community and dedicated to funding activities that build community wealth and meet community needs. The proposed system will look quite similar to the one that existed in the United States before the wave of financial deregulation that began in the 1960s. The How to Liberate America from Wall Street Rule report briefly traces that history, outlines its devastating consequences, and presents an agenda for corrective action to change the system rules, structure, and culture. To read the report online...
