Most Pain Killers Deplete The Body Of The B Vitamin Folic Acid

Categories

With all negative news concerning Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs (NSAID's) and the Cox 2 inhibitors Vioxx, Celebrex and Naproxin, it is notable that all the experts - doctors and pharmacists - have failed to mention one salient fact. All of these drugs, including the oldest pain killer Asprin, deplete the body of the B vitamin Folic acid.

Folic acid is one of the most common vitamin deficiencies and it is vital in metabolizing homocysteine, a toxic amino acid that is recognized as one of the most critical independent risk factors to cardiovascular disease. Homocysteine, directly damages the vascular system thereby starting a disease process that leads to atherosclerosis and increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Why doctors and pharmacists don't know this or, if they do know it, fail to mention this fact to patients is a sad commentary on the state of nutritional education in the medical and pharmacy faculties of our universities and negligent failure on the part of regulatory authorities who approved the pain killers in the first place.

Debunking The "So Called" Fluoride "Experts"
Heard Dr. Neil Farrell's (Middlesex London Health Unit) interview with Erika Ritter on 2003/06/10, CBC's Ontario Morning program supporting the use of water fluoridation. It, yet again, boggles my mind to hear this "so called expert" espousing on the efficacy of ingesting fluoride. His reason to maintain toxic substance in London's water is: and I quote "I believe fluoride in Water prevents carries" We are to take it that this... [read more]

Response to 'expert' views on pesticides & BSE
These follow up comments on the 'expert' response gives a pretty sad commentary on scientific leadership that all of us treasure so highly.... Health Canada Harassment to Stop Vitamin Supplements that Work
Here is an example how Health Canada is looking after our concerns. Like in Australia, the CODEX initiative Europe a battle on food supplements is now in full gear in Canada. Health Canada is doing everything, except what it should be doing. They are hell bend on removing our freedoms to access cost effective products and trying to force us towards the very profitable, disease management toxic drugs paradigm. All... [read more]

Readers' Comments

Thanks for this Paul, another less rigorous book of interest is "The nutritional Cost of Prescription Drugs"

Chris Gupta

The most authoritative book in this area that I have come across is the Drug-Induced Nutrient Depletion Handbook, 1999-2000 by Ross Pelton RPh, PhD, CCN; James B. Lavalle RPh, DHM, NMD, CCN; Ernest B. Hawkins RPh, MS; Daniel L. Krinsky RPh, MS.

Also see at: http://www.health-n-energy.com/BOOKSTORE/bookmonh.htm or MySimon.com to purchase.

Also check out the Life Extension Foundation’s review of the book here.

Containing a complete listing of all drugs known to deplete the body of nutritional compounds the handbook also includes abstracts from some of the research in this area (which in the case of aspirin and vitamin C depletion dates back to at least 1936). Other sections include information on nutrient depletion and cancer, food-drug interactions and herb/nutrient depletions.

Highly recommended.
