Avian Influenza: Are You Prepared?
U.S. and U.N. agencies and the Council on Foreign Relations are spreading the word that the Avian Influenza, if it breaks out this fall or winter, could be as severe as the worldwide Spanish Influenza epidemic of 1918, and they are predicting hundreds of millions of deaths worldwide.
According to Jonathan Campbell, "this influenza, currently isolated in China, is a hemorrhagic illness. It kills half of its victims by rapidly depleting ascorbate (vitamin C) stores in the body, inducing scurvy and collapse of the arterial blood supply, causing internal hemorrhaging of the lungs and sinus cavities."
"Most people today have barely enough vitamin C in their bodies (typically 60 mg per day) to prevent scurvy under normal living conditions, and are not prepared for this kind of illness."

Jonathan Campbell says how using liberal amounts of vitamin C and a few other essential herbs and nutrients could make all the difference in the world once the epidemic does appear and the virus transmits between humans. The recommendations are in his article: Prepare for Avian Influenza!

And more recently, an interesting connection of the mineral selenium with areas that show outbreaks of "avian influenza" among factory farmed chickens and other birds. Selenium is a mineral that is closely linked with our immune defenses, and China as well as Africa and wide areas in Europe are deficient in the mineral in their soils, making it more likely for fast-mutating viral species to develop.
Adequate intake of selenium seems, after some time, to reverse the situation, making the immune system once more able to fight off the assault. So whatever you do, you might want to include selenium in your preventive supplementation plan, in addition to gram doses of vitamin C, some lysine (amino acid), a multivitamin / mineral and some extra calcium and magnesium.
You might also want to stock up on your favorite herbal anti-virals, as suggested by Jonathan in his article.
