The Importance of Iodine for Good Health

"Iodine, taken in doses substantially greater than the recommended dietary allowance, has been shown to reverse fibrocystic disease of the breast and prevent breast cancer."

Reading this blurb in a recent issue of Nexus Magazine peeked my interest and I soon found myself devouring the corresponding article.

Iodine is really one of those substances - it is a mineral - that, like vitamin C, we use to prevent an acute deficiency, without however realizing that beyond that limited use there is a whole world of benefits to be found at higher intakes than those recommended by the 'experts'.

In the case of vitamin C, it was a paper by Steve Hickey and Hilary Roberts that pointed out how our normal way of measuring whether we have sufficient vitamin C does not take into account the very short half life of only abour 30 minutes that this vitamin has in the human body. So while measurements were undertaken to see at what doses humans start to excrete the vitamin, they did not take into account that with "continuous dosing" in freqent amounts, we can retain much more of the vitamin than the 60 milligrams needed just to keep us from getting scurvy. Hickey's work is referenced in

Vitamin C Deficiency Widespread - Link to Heart Disease, Infections, Cancer.

And what do you know... the situation is very similar with iodine. Since it is needed in minute amounts to keep the thyroid functioning properly, the thyroid experts have become the 'iodine experts'. They are warning us of toxicity in dosages higher than the few hundred micrograms needed to maintain thyroid function.

Yet the Japanese who routinely eat algae with their meals, easily get between ten and twenty milligrams - about a hundred times the amount the experts recommend - without ill effects. And what do you know - Japanese women have a much lower incidence of breast cancer than women living in the western world, but only if they continue to live in Japan. Their rate of disease will rise to levels comparable with that of their western cousins, if they move and adapt to our diet.

But breast disease is not the whole story, there are many more wonderful effects of iodine when generously supplied. I was very much impressed by what I read and said to myself "this article should be on the internet to make it widely available".

So searching around for the text, I found the article had actually been published on Lew Rockwell's site last year, before it found its way into the print edition of Nexus. Here's the link:

Iodine for Health

by Donald W. Miller, Jr., MD

There is growing evidence that Americans would have better health and a lower incidence of cancer and fibrocystic disease of the breast if they consumed more iodine. A decrease in iodine intake coupled with an increased consumption of competing halogens, fluoride and bromide, has created an epidemic of iodine deficiency in America.

Fluoride Linked to Obesity Epidemic, Thyroid Trouble
Could it be that the obesity epidemic that is plaguing the US, the UK and other countries is linked to fluoride in drinking water? Dr Barry Durrant-Peatfield certainly seems to support that possibility when he says that "there is no doubt that fluoride is enzyme disruptive and one thing it affects is thyroid hormones", adding that "people can finish up with partial under-activity of the thyroid gland." Thanks so much for this article~!

I recently became worried that my thyroid was not functioning as it should.I had the symptoms of it anyway, so I decided to see if I could help it with glandular support and adding a liquid Bladderwrack.

Maybe all I had to do was supplement with good old fashioned iodine? LOL

I'm sure I'll be finding out!
