Ascorbic Acid could lower health care cost - Atomic Scientist says

Ascorbic Acid could drastically lower the costs of health care, if a few grams of the vitamin daily were provided to everyone, from children to elders, says a 99-year-old atomic scientist who has tried it out for himself. The argument is sound. Effects of the vitamin are many and overwhelmingly positive.

The Vitamin C Foundation, which first published the open letter of Theodore P. Jorgensen, says that cardiovascular death rates dropped drastically after vitamin C started to be used in high doses by large numbers of people, especially after the publication of Linus Pauling's popular book "Vitamin C and the Common Cold".

This seems to be one of the great insanities of our health system. The official recommendation for daily vitamin C consumption is on the order of 60 to 90 milligrams, while our need by all indications far exceeds that quantity - perhaps by as much as two orders of magnitude. Jorgensen, in his excellent letter, explains why lack of adequate amounts of vitamin C in our diet may be the single most important factor determining ill health.

A BRILLIANT IDEA FROM A MEMBER OF THE MANHATTAN PROJECT

"... a free supply of ascorbic acid to every person would lower the cost of health care in a major way ..." - Theodore Jorgensen

Dear Sir or Madam as the case may be,

The easiest thing for me to do is not to write this letter. But if you continue to read it I think you will understand why I have written it. This letter concerns vitally important ideas, probably far more than you can imagine. The calendar tells me that I am in my 99th year ( this is not a misprint ) and I must tell you a few things about myself.

I am a retired physics professor, with a Ph.D. from Harvard. I spent the war years working on the Atomic Bomb at Los Alamos. On my return to teaching, I originated and directed an atomic accelerator project at the University of Nebraska, which continues to be financed to the present time by the Federal Government. I was retired from the University in my 70th year. Since that time my mental activities have been mainly involved with studying the swing of a golf club which allowed me to write a best seller on the Physics of Golf.

I grew up on a subsistence homestead in northwestern South Dakota. The many grasshoppers on the prairie gave my mother the idea that these were prime turkey food. She could get fertile turkey eggs only when her turkeys were fed cod-liver oil. She fed it to her turkeys and also to her five children. Thus at the age of about thirteen years I became interested in nutrition.

Vitamin C was discovered to be ascorbic acid in 1931. Soon chemistry had developed to the stage where this substance could be synthesized. When a supply of pure ascorbic acid could be obtained, this substance was used in medical research. Unfortunately the substance was thought to be a vitamin and since it was known that vitamins were effective in very small amounts, for many years research using ascorbic acid was done using very small amounts of the substance. It took many years before it was discovered that ascorbic acid could be used to produce fabulous results when used correctly in medical and clinical research.

It was discovered that vitamin C was not a poisonous substance when used in the human body. It was also discovered that solutions of ascorbic acid in proper concentrations would kill bacteria and viruses. Happily a patient's blood could, through the proper use of ascorbic acid, be made able to kill them too. The concentration needed in a specific case had of course somehow to be decided.

It was also discovered that most animals produced there own ascorbic acid and that human beings, apes, monkeys, and guinea pigs, could not make any at all. The conclusion of the thinking on this problem was that the animals which could not make ascorbic acid had a genetic defect involving one enzyme which was lost millions of years ago because ascorbic acid was so easy to be obtained in the food then available.

It was early decided that the Recommended Daily Allowance, the RDA, for a healthy human male would be arbitrarily set at the 60 mg per day. The rate chosen for monkeys was substantially larger than that for humans.

The amount of ascorbic acid needed for a man to allow him to have optimum health is of course unknown. Some idea of the amount he should have would be what his body would make if he had this ability. This leads to the consideration of the rate of ascorbic acid made by healthy animals. Such studies have been made and the values range far above those of the current RDA for humans.

Another effect of ascorbic acid must be mentioned. The level of cholesterol in a persons blood varies inversely with the level of the ascorbic acid in the blood. When I learned of this I decided to perform an experiment on myself. My cholesterol level had been running at 240 units for several years. My doctor told me he could give me a drug to lower the cholesterol level but he was afraid of the damage that might be done by the drug. An experiment had been reported that a person's cholesterol level depended on the amount of white sugar ingested. With this information in mind, I decided to eliminate sucrose in my diet as much as I could in our culture while I arbitrarily set my intake of ascorbic acid at five gram per day. Much to my doctor's surprise, my cholesterol level fell from 240 units down to 180 units. I know of similar experiments with similar results. Also I have not had a cold since I have been taking the larger amount of ascorbic acid.

When I learned that a solution of ascorbic acid in a proper concentration would have properties for killing both bacteria and viruses and that the concentration of ascorbic acid in a person's blood could be adjusted to such a concentration by the amount of ascorbic acid ingested, I was led to try to find examples of this use of ascorbic acid in medical literature.

Dr. Robert F. Cathcart of Los Altos, California has found a method of determining the amount of ascorbic acid to be used in any given case. He found that the amount of ascorbic acid to use was just less than the amount which would produce a laxative effect in the patient. Dr. Cathcart reports that he has treated 9000 patients with many kinds of infections and not a single patient treated with ascorbic acid has had to go to a hospital. There are other reports by doctors who have had phenomenal similar effects in which they determined the amount of ascorbic acid by trial.

It was also discovered that most animals produce their own ascorbic acid and that human beings, apes, monkeys, and guinea pigs could not make any at all. The conclusion of the thinking on this problem was that those animals which could not make ascorbic acid had a genetic defect involving one enzyme which was lost millions of years ago because ascorbic acid was so easy to obtain in the foods then available.

In order to obtain the amount of ascorbic acid a human being should have, work was done to find what other animals made for their own use. The result of this study put the value of ascorbic acid at 2.3 to 10 grams per 154 pound man in good health.

It is virtually impossible for any person to obtain this much ascorbic acid per day from ordinary or casual ways. This also indicates that human beings are living with dangerously low levels of ascorbic acid. The above information gives some idea of the reason our cost of health care is so high and our average age of death is so low. This problem is a national disgrace and should be attacked on a national basis. There are two reasons why this should be done.

One reason is that a free supply of ascorbic acid to every person would lower the cost of health care in a major way. The other is that in this age of possible terrorist attacks with chemical and biological agents (bacterial and viral) we are vulnerable because we have not applied and extended the knowledge we do have to the practice of medicine. Any practical approach to the ascorbic acid problem would require the whole prestige and authority of the federal government.

I can only leave the solutions of these problems of the public health and the implementation of corrections to the younger generations. As you can see, I think we can and should work toward a solution. Have I convinced you of this possibility too?

Has there been an ongoing conspiracy against vitamin C pills? Did vitamin C researchers, Drs. Were factitious reports about vitamin C widely spread to create public doubt about high-dose vitamin C, such as the false claim that high-dose vitamin C causes gene mutations that could lead to cancer?

Now, in graphic detail, a documentary slide show reveals how government health authorities conducted flawed scientific experiments to hide the many health benefits of vitamin C. British researchers Steve Hickey and Hilary Roberts reveal the flawed science, dispel the false idea that high-dose vitamin C creates nothing more than expensive urine, and show how humans can triple their blood concentrations of vitamin C and dramatically reduce their risk for heart attacks, cataracts, aneurysms, allergy and many other maladies. For the first time the public will view what happens inside arteries when vitamin C levels are low. Viewers will learn that most sudden-death heart attacks are not caused by cholesterol but a type of arterial plaque induced by a shortage of vitamin C.

EXPERTS CALL FOR REVIEW OF RECOMMENDED DIETARY ALLOWANCE FOR VITAMIN C

With newly published research reports showing that higher concentrations of vitamin C can be achieved in the blood plasma than previously thought possible, antioxidant researchers have penned their names to a plea for a scientific re-evaluation of the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for vitamin C.

A dozen prominent antioxidant researchers, authors, and clinicians say the prevalent belief that 200 milligrams of oral vitamin C, an amount that can be obtained by eating five servings of selected fresh fruits and vegetables, can saturate the blood plasma and additional amounts are excreted in the urine, has now been disproved. Two recently published papers indicate that blood plasma levels of ascorbic acid can be raised three times greater than a flawed 1996 study indicates. One of the published studies shows that blood plasma concentrations of vitamin C continue to rise with a single 1000 milligrams dose of supplemental vitamin C.

Drs. Steve Hickey and Hilary Roberts, pharmacology graduates of the University of Manchester in England assert the initial studies used to determine the blood plasma saturation point for vitamin C failed to calculate for the half life of this vitamin. In their newly published book, Drs. Hickey and Roberts show that the original calculations used to establish the RDA were performed 12 hours, or 24 half lives, after oral consumption of vitamin C and are therefore invalid. (Ascorbate: The Science of Vitamin C, 264 pages, referenced, ebook: www.lulu.com/ascorbate)

In addition to Drs. Hickey and Roberts, the list of researchers calling for a re-evaluation of the RDA for vitamin C includes: Thomas E. Levy MD, JD, author of Vitamin C, Infectious Diseases, and Toxins: Curing the Incurable (Philadelphia, PA: Xlibris Corporation; 2002); Robert F. Cathcart III, MD, a practicing physician and advocate of high oral-dose vitamin C therapy; Richard Passwater PhD, antioxidant researcher and author of Supernutrition; Patrick Holford, London, author of the Optimum Nutrition Bible; Dr Archie Kalokerinos, M.D., Graduate Sydney University, Australia, author of Vitamin C: Nature's Miraculous Healing Missile; Joel M. Riordan, M.D., Director - Bio-Communications Research Institute, Wichita, Kansas; and Abram Hoffer, M.D., PhD., F.R.C.P., a practicing physician, advocate of nutritional medicine and editor of the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine.

The written plea was sent to the Institutes of Medicine, Food & Nutrition Board, which establishes the Recommended Dietary Allowances for essential nutrients. ####

PLEA CONCERNING ORAL VITAMIN C/RDA FOR VITAMIN C

As health professionals who have been involved in vitamin C research, it has recently come to our attention that higher blood plasma concentrations of vitamin C can be achieved through oral intake than previously thought possible. This scientific revelation has ramifications upon the current Recommended Dietary Allowance for vitamin C and personal health regimens for consumers. It is apparent the current published advice, that the blood plasma concentration for vitamin C is saturated at 200 milligrams oral consumption, must be revised. Furthermore, it is apparent the RDA for vitamin C needs immediate re-evaluation. We urge the scientific community and other responsible health authorities to take timely action to correct misinformation concerning oral dosing of vitamin C and to join an effort to re-evaluate the RDA for vitamin C.

National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the National Cancer Institut, and the Clinical Center, National Institutes
of Health, Bethesda, Maryland 20892-1372, USA.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin C at high concentrations is toxic to cancer cells in vitro. Early clinical studies of vitamin C in patients with terminal cancer suggested clinical benefit, but 2 double-blind, placebo-controlled trials showed none. However, these studies used different routes of administration.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether plasma vitamin C concentrations vary substantially with the route of administration.
DESIGN: Dose concentration studies and pharmacokinetic modeling.
SETTING: Academic medical center.
PARTICIPANTS: 17 healthy hospitalized volunteers. MEASUREMENTS: Vitamin C plasma and urine concentrations were measured after administration of oral and intravenous doses at a dose range of 0.015 to 1.25 g, and plasma concentrations were calculated for a dose range of 1 to 100 g.
RESULTS: Peak plasma vitamin C concentrations were higher after administration of intravenous doses than after administration of oral doses (P smaller than 0.001), and the difference increased according to dose. Vitamin C at a dose of 1.25 g administered orally produced mean (+/-sd) peak plasma concentrations of 134.8 +/- 20.6 micromol/L compared with 885 +/- 201.2 micromol/L for intravenous administration. For the maximum tolerated oral dose of 3 g every 4 hours, pharmacokinetic modeling predicted peak plasma vitamin C concentrations of 220 micromol/L and 13 400 micromol/L for a 50-g intravenous dose. Peak predicted urine concentrations of vitamin C from intravenous administration were 140-fold higher than those from maximum oral doses.
LIMITATIONS: Patient data are not available to confirm pharmacokinetic modeling at high doses and in patients with cancer.
CONCLUSIONS: Oral vitamin C produces plasma concentrations that are tightly controlled. Only intravenous administration of vitamin C produces high plasma and urine concentrations that might have antitumor activity. Because efficacy of vitamin C treatment cannot be judged from clinical trials that use only oral dosing, the role of vitamin C in cancer treatment should be reevaluated.

Polidori MC, Mecocci P, Levine M, Frei B., Short-term and long-term vitamin C supplementation in humans dose-dependently increases the resistance of plasma to ex vivo lipid peroxidation, Archives Biochemistry Biophysics, March 423: 109-15, 2004. Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology I, Heinrich-Heine University, Duesseldorf, Germany.

To assess the effects of short-term and long-term vitamin C supplementation in humans on plasma antioxidant status and resistance to oxidative stress, plasma was obtained from 20 individuals before and 2h after oral administration of 2g of vitamin C, or from eight subjects enrolled in a vitamin C depletion-repletion study using increasing daily doses of vitamin C from 30 to 2500 mg. Plasma concentrations of ascorbate, but not other physiological antioxidants, increased significantly after short-term supplementation, and increased progressively in the long-term study with increasing vitamin C doses of up to 1000 mg/day. Upon incubation of plasma with a free radical initiator, ascorbate concentrations were positively correlated with the lag phase preceding detectable lipid peroxidation. We conclude that vitamin C supplementation in humans dose-dependently increases plasma ascorbate concentrations and, thus, the resistance of plasma to lipid peroxidation ex vivo. Plasma and body saturation with vitamin C in humans appears desirable to maximize antioxidant protection and lower risk of oxidative damage.

VITAMIN C HAS BEEN KNOWN TO FIGHT 30 MAJOR DISEASES . . . FOR OVER 50 YEARS

... why haven't you heard more about it? Why haven't more doctors used vitamin C as medicine?

Progress takes time. Fresh fruit was known to cure scurvy by 1753, yet governments ignored the fact for nearly 100 years. Countless thousands died in the meantime. The 19th century doctor who first advocated washing one's hands between patients died ignored and in disgrace with the medical profession. The toxic metal mercury was used as medicine into the twentieth century.

The first physician to aggressively use vitamin C to cure disease was Frederick R. Klenner, MD, beginning back in the early 1940's. Dr. Klenner successfully treated chicken pox, measles, mumps, tetanus and polio with huge doses of the vitamin.

The following is a complete list of the conditions that Dr. Klenner found that responded to extremely high dose vitamin C therapy:

Pneumonia
Encephalitis
Herpes Zoster (shingles)
Herpes Simplex
Mononucleosis
Pancreatitis
Hepatitis
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
Bladder Infection
Alcoholism
Arthritis
Some Cancers
Leukemia
Atherosclerosis
Ruptured Intervertebral Disc
High Cholesterol
Corneal Ulcer
Diabetes
Glaucoma
Schizophrenia
Burns and secondary infections
Heat Stroke
Radiation Burns
Heavy Metal Poisoning (Mercury, Lead)
Venomous Bites
Multiple Sclerosis
Chronic Fatigue
Complications of Surgery

This seems like an impossibly long list. At this point, one can either dismiss the subject or investigate further. Dr. Klenner chose to investigate. The result? He used massive doses of vitamin C for over forty years of family practice. He wrote two dozen medical papers on the subject. (1) It is difficult to ignore his success, but it has been done. Dr. Klenner wrote: "Some physicians would stand by and see their patient die rather than use ascorbic acid (vitamin C) because in their finite minds it exists only as a vitamin."

Vitamin C is remarkably safe even in enormously high doses. Compared to commonly used prescription drugs, side effects are virtually nonexistent. It does not cause kidney stones. In fact, vitamin C helps dissolve kidney stones and prevents their formation. William J. McCormick, MD, used vitamin C since the late 1940's to prevent and treat kidney stones. (2) Robert F. Cathcart III, MD, reports that he started using vitamin C in massive doses with patients in 1969. He writes: “I estimate that I have put 25,000 patients on massive doses of vitamin C and none have developed kidney stones.?? (3) Said Dr. Klenner: "The ascorbic acid/kidney stone story is a myth." Recent scholarship has confirmed this. (4,5)

How much vitamin C is an effective therapeutic dose? Dr. Klenner administered up to an astounding 300,000 milligrams (mg) per day. Generally, he gave 350 to 700 mg per kilogram (2.2 lb) body weight per day. That is a lot of vitamin C.

But then again, look at that list of successes.

Dr. Klenner emphasized that small amounts do not work. He said, "If you want results, use adequate ascorbic acid."
