New Zealand: Ministry Resorts To 'Meningococcal Monsters' - Media Silent
CategoriesNew Zealand's Health Ministry has described a meningococcal bug - MeNZB - as a scary monster that must be eradicated by immediate vaccination of more than a million children with an experimental vaccine.
Looking at the actual statistics (see graphic) we find that the virus has infected only eight people - causing no deaths - among New Zealanders living in the Bay of Plenty area in 2004 and that the number of cases has been on a steep downtrend for two years. This is in sharp contrast with the ministry's public statements.
Ron Law, an independent risk and policy analyst, charges that the ministry is dishonest in its promotion of the vaccine with fear tactics.

"It's a sad day for public health policy in New Zealand when officials substitute monsters for science in promoting non-evidenced-based policy," says independent risk & policy analyst Ron Law."Resorting to emotion and hyperbole, such as, "Parents Urged To Immunise Against Meningococcal Monster," "move fast," and "scary" suggests that the Ministry of Health has taken advice from the Used Vacuum Cleaners Marketing Association," says Ron Law, 'It's a shame they aren't telling the public the truth so that they can make an informed choice."
For example, the Ministry's press release [http://www.scoop.co.nz/mason/stories/GE0502/S00054.htm] says
Western Bay Primary Health Organisation chairman and family doctor John Gemming says the Bay of Plenty's infection statistics are high. "The epidemic doesn't seem to be diminishing and this vaccination is our only chance of controlling it."
The phrase "Doesn't seem to be diminishing," is at odds with the BOPDHB Medical Officer of Health's comments in their latest newsletter which says,
"In 2003 New Zealand had 544 cases of meningococcal disease. In 2004 there were 340 cases, a reduction of 37.5%." and
"In 2003 the Bay of Plenty DHB area had 50 cases, with 13 in 2004, a reduction of 74%. So at face value there was a marked reduction in cases in BOPDHB last year compared to the previous year."
The fact is that numbers of cases of meningococcal disease caused by the epidemic strain targeted by the MeNZB(tm) vaccine have declined to 8 in 2004, down from 38 at peak levels. That's a consistent decline of 78% ... and yet the Ministry's press release says, "The epidemic doesn't seem to be diminishing."

"When will the Ministry of Health stop this public health charade? When will the media challenge the Ministry of Health's monster lies?" asks Ron Law.
